They need to understand that they might have good qualities and great thinking, but they are not experienced. Therefore, working with an expert mentor could give them the support they need to achieve success.

Find an issue or a topic to which you can contribute insight through research, analytics, and visualization, and share your work! This will help to establish you, and the things you create, as adding to understanding of that topic, regardless of where you work.

As researchers, we're often so deep into our research that we forget which pieces of it are relevant to those outside of our small corner of the field. Learning how to speak to others, including non-academics, about your research is an important element to communicating your brand. I've heard this called the "grandma test" as in "Explain this in a way your grandma would understand," and it's important to do it succinctly so you don't lose people's interest. These methods might temporarily boost your visibility through fleeting trends or promotions, or by endorsements from individuals outside your expertise area. However, such approaches are often tied to a specific moment in time and don't contribute to the long-term development of your brand.

As an introverted researcher myself, I recommend that: ✨ Value your brand considering that one of the missions of scientists is to disseminate evidence-based information. ✨ Use the strategy of sharing the learnings you are having and those you have already had to help deal with imposter syndrome. ✨ Understand that you only become good by doing, and this process will speed up your learning. ✨ People who achieve many results will have little time to criticize you, and if they can, they will help you. Think about it! :)

When we start writing online, we often feel like others know more than us, and that we have nothing to offer. I had a professor say "there is nobody who has said it exactly like you will say it". That is a great mentality to have when you approach building a personal brand early in your career. You can be the person who shares your unique experience, which can help others follow their path to success.

The research industry is ever increasingly broad and consists of a range of disciplines. A key peice of advice I would share if you're starting out as a researcher is to keep an open mind and understand the overall research landscape. As you become aware of the different areas and specialisms take your time to identify what suits your skills and interests. Creating a 'personal brand' both takes and deserves time. It's important to be clear and know where you want to be within your career and the difference you want to make and work towards that. Your brand will then in time take shape and grow based on your credibility within that space.

It's important to seek feedback from your colleagues and senior colleagues in the research field. Online reviews and recommendations from online surveys can also go along with helping you seek feedback.
