What do you do if your Design team is comprised of individuals from diverse backgrounds?

Embracing diversity is a most. It will help solving challenges using everyone's background knowledge while setting expectation for others to foster collaboration in a respectful environment. It brings different minds together for more innovative ideas, opens up for new learning areas and approach to new subject as we see differently depending on the individual. All of that with the positive thinking of celebrating the success from the fruits of labors we all put together, as we can see in the entertainment industry like Walt Disney World, Cirque du Soleil and many more. I want to emphasize the idea that this is all felt and shared with the guest/costumers through the experience, the services and the product they will consume.

Although Diversity and Inclusion efforts have been taking a beating as of late, in my experience, diversity is a vital nutrient for creative environments. Diversity in thought, experience and approach almost always leads to much better output. Without it, innovation is likely to suffer; and arguably success as well. When leadership sets a culture that doesn’t value or reward diversity in general, they’ve lost their way.

Multidisciplinary is half the battle. Where people with diverse skills and backgrounds do exist within a single organization (which is very rare in of itself), it is likely they all stay in their own lanes and the process of creation is sequential. In the creation of a massive hotel, for example, the development team is initially involved, then the project is handed to the master planners, the architects, the interior designers, then the brand development folks, then graphic designers, etc. etc. Innovative brands understand the absolute need to have a fully Interdisciplinary organizational matrix where each perspective is ‘at the table’ and embraced,providing guidance throughout the entire process thus achieving a holistic solution.

In my experience diversity add value in a creative team . Creativity is driven by emotions. Different backgrounds of people add an interesting layer of emotional connect and experiences.

In design management, clarity is key. By setting clear goals, processes, and standards from the start, diverse teams can avoid confusion and work more effectively and efficiently. Transparent decision-making and recognising everyone's contributions foster trust and collaboration - a recipe for producing great work!

Making sure everyone knows what's expected in a team is really important, especially when the team is made up of people from different backgrounds. This helps everyone understand what the team is trying to achieve and how they can help using their own special skills. This way, the team can work better together, using the different things each person knows and can do to reach their goals.

In my experience as a design team leader, it is necessary to establish trust and integrity in team members when setting up projects for success. It also involves the need for a clear understanding by individual team members of the processes inherent in the design project, where different skillsets, ideas and insights form the building blocks of the proposed design outcome. Based on this approach, collaboration will follow naturaly. This also requires structure and discipline in the management and running of a controlled design process, particularly in scheduled regular team meetings and workshops.

I work in and am proud to be a part of a diverse team. Not what you might expect, the owner of the company - my boss Mark at OWL Bathrooms is deaf, so is his wife, and our bathroom/kitchen fitters are too. It’s amazing to see how a diverse workplace offers unique benefits. Where I fit in is, I can enable comms between client, owner, fitters, suppliers etc … It makes the design, sales & fit process easier and smoother - oh I design the spaces too 😊

One of the most exciting aspects of working on diverse design teams and projects is the incredible wealth of knowledge and experience individuals bring to the table. From my experience as an interior stylist, creative director, and business owner, the biggest lesson I have learnt is to keep things circular. When you feel you can add value, give back to your creative industry. Either through mentoring, apprenticeships, or informal catch-ups, as giving back will encourage learning.

Multiple people with different backgrounds are the most effective ways to push each other on team towards achieving goals with positive competition and learning. Encouraging, Engaging and Enhancing truly become a part of the team because of which as a group we utilize everyone’s strengths and challenges to create various solutions. I read this in one of the old articles and stumbled upon “Everyone thinks creativity is only design or architecture field but no one understands that creativity is present in every field be it Accounts, Human Resources or any other. Creativity lies in the mind of a human not in the positions they are working.” I believe it even to this day.

While diversity should be celebrated, let's not focus on it to the exclusion of one Universal truth... We are all the same on the inside! Same blood runs through our veins, same needs inspire us, same desire motivates us, same passions flame us. Treat others with equality and you will foster deep relationships regardless of diversity and in spite of it.

It's also true that there are often different tasks within a design department. One should figure out who is best at what and accordingly assign tasks. This way, everyone sees that each person has a specialty where they excel, and that everyone plays an important role because each contributes something different. This makes everyone feel secure and eliminates any sense of competition. Additionally, everyone sees that they can learn from each other because each person has their own specialized area. This fosters a cooperative atmosphere of mutual appreciation.

No one has mentioned it, but it’s important to understand there are some design exercises that only require singular design voices and some that require a strong design group. Strangely enough the size of the design project is not the deciding factor as I have worked on million dollar projects that had a primary designer and I have worked on smaller projects with series of requested units and a diverse design eye helped get some diversity in a small project. Set the design group up for success by setting their expectation for contributions.
