(Unlikely unless your businesses goes under if this service is not available) Isolate; Block access for bad actors. This might be via firewalls or if unsure removing all network cables from device Discover; Have the bad actors infiltrated any other systems Analyse; Preferably have a security expert reverse engineer any payloads left in the system so you can get an accurate assessment of everything the bad actors did. Failing that read all logs and figure out what has happened, but remember logs can be altered or deleted

In Addition to this, During a security breach impact assessment should include understanding the type of environment (production or non-production), its accessibility (internet-facing or internal), its role in user interaction (customer-facing or back-end), and the sensitivity of the data it stores (especially PII and PHI). By examining these factors, we can get a deeper understanding of the breach's scope and potential consequences. This information is critical for prioritizing containment efforts and effective response plan to mitigate the damage.

Well the first thing is to stop the attack to prevent it from doing more damage. In the WORST CASE scenario, this means "pulling the plug".

Additionally, I will require that all software be updated to the latest versions to address vulnerabilities that may have led to the breach. This rigorous protocol is designed to fortify our infrastructure, ensuring robust protection against future intrusions.

Data Recovery is a key step in bouncing back from a breach. It's only effective if backups haven't been touched by the attacker. Strong backups ensure the organization's cyber resilience, allowing the organization to bounce back from attacks with greater speed. Simply having backups isn't enough, should ensure backups are secure. Implement robust security controls around backups which include encryption, access controls, and proper segmentation. Maintain a well-defined versioning and retention policy to ensure have access to multiple versions of data and can restore from a point in time. Regularly test your backups to confirm they can be restored after a breach. Avoid storing backups on the same systems/networks as your primary data.

Fight Back with Scans: Run updated antivirus scans on all your previously connected devices. Change Those Passwords, Now! Update passwords for ALL online accounts you used on the compromised network. Make them strong and unique.

Upon successful containment and documentation of the breach, it is imperative to update the security policy. The domain of security is dynamic, and hence, any security breach should be treated as an opportunity to enhance the security policy. The updated policy should encompass preventive measures to ensure that such breaches do not recur. Additionally, it should incorporate procedural enhancements to expedite the recovery of the network in the event of future breaches.

Never let a good disaster go to waste. This is the opportunity to address security risk and improve data protection practices by the company. During a lesson learn activity, we have identified additional risks that need to be addressed that were never thought of until there was a group discussion. Never make lessons learned session a finger pointing meeting. Stick to the facts and have the goal in mind to learn from the incident.

Update to stakeholders: Inform key stakeholders within your organization about the breach, including IT personnel, management, legal, and any other relevant departments. Depending on the severity of the breach and your organization's policies, you may also need to notify customers or other external parties.

Make sure your executive team understands the term “fog of war”. During the incident, many things will be said as the CIRT team tries to understand what is happening and how to remediate the situation. Some of these comments may be incorrect or lead down a path that doesn’t provide the root cause to the situation. I have found it better to hold two separate communication paths, executive and CIRT Team. Many technical folks on the CIRT team may feel less comfortable speaking up if the C-Suite is on an incident bridge/call. This may require that there are two call bridges, and the Incident Manager is running between groups providing the latest information on the situation.

Based on my observations and experiences, one of the key challenges we face is a lack of readiness when incidents occur. Often, there is no established plan in place to guide our response. I strongly believe that being prepared for such incidents is the first step towards effectively managing them. I suggest that this plan should be reviewed and updated regularly, at least semi-annually. Regular reviews will help ensure that the plan remains relevant and effective in addressing the evolving nature of threats and vulnerabilities. Additionally, regular reviews can help identify any gaps or areas for improvement in our incident response processes.
