Managing work priorities and personal life balance relies on good planning, open communications, shared responsibilities (at work and in the family) and assessing top priorities consistently. One of my personal practices was integrating my work and family obligations calendars. Knowing ahead and in advance the critical project steps, and my family’s (children) needs. Having a contingency plan, delegation and team work are essential. Definitely when foreseeing issues, escalate to management and work alternatives to get back on track. Here's the truth: Nobody will congratulate you if you start putting over hours. People will expect it as a part of your duties. You need to communicate priorities and boundaries with your manager. If too much is on your plate, you must drop some priorities or hire more people. It's not your job to work all the time. But it is your job to communicate risks.
