Networking and developing your skills. It's hard to start on game programming because it's such a broad field. So you start small: - make a Github account - start contributing to projects you are interested in(OSS games, game engines), it may not be the code itself, but feedback on ideas from other collaborators, PR reviews, ask for feedback, ask questions even if you think it's silly. - make your own simple OSS games, again, start small but go full circle - create, publish, get feedback, improve - get some visibility, be active in game dev communities, hackatons, conferences - repeat steps above as many times as needed - don't give up Eventually you'll build portfolio and find people who appreciate your effort and potential.

For all entry level game developers out there looking for a job, I would suggest doing these things, 1) Make your grip at Programming (mostly entry level game developers overlook grip at programming due to UI based game flows) 2) Learn all the modules of a gaming engine, at least enough to start using them professionally 3) Get your portfolio ready and do not just RE-SKIN the games but do something that you really developed from scratch 4) Once you are done with learning and portfolio setup, Now focus on networking and attend events, connect with industry people at Linkedin etc, observe closely latest industry trends and post content accordingly so that people start noticing you, keep updated with jobs section and do apply with confidence!

Make sure you have a strong grasp of programming languages commonly used in game development, like C++ or C#. Build small game projects to showcase your skills and gain experience. There are many online tutorials and resources available to help you get started.

Almost every job I've had in the game industry has been thanks to a friend. Make friends. Go to industry events in your area. Join Facebook, Linked In and Discord groups. Create a team of friends and make a game together. That way, you'll have something to show when you apply for a job. You could even reach out to experienced vets like myself for mentorship and advice. Be proactive. That's the best way to get what you want in the game industry (and in life)

Make connections within the gaming industry. Attend game development conferences and meetups, join online communities, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.

Networking is really important if your searching for a job. You will need to add recruiters of your dream companies. Increase the social circle. Social platforms are really great. you can discuss work related stuff with like minded people. You can even find mentors and get career guidance.

Never underestimate the power of networking for video games. Lone wolves don't make it too far in the game industry. Find out about game dev communities in your area. Reach out, get to know people. Making an entire video game on your own is quite challenging, and the best way to tackle that is to get to know people that can easily do the things you can't.

From my experience, which may not be much, but I hope it can help whoever is starting out. - The first thing is to make yourself known not only to people from the same sector or group but also to people from human resources, managers, and feel out the general picture, the situation may not be good for anyone but you have to try. -Be as active as possible, even with small things, and meet as many people and at various points as possible, and don't pay too much attention if you see that you have appeared in many or few searches at the beginning.

Don't just have a generic resume. Read the job description carefully and identify the specific skills and experience they're looking for. Tailor your resume keywords to match the language used in the job description. This will help your resume pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) used by many companies.

Constantly update your resume portfolio and profile. I have seen many resume with mistakes. Keep your grammar clean and alignments correct in resume. Try to remove stuff and keep it concise but don't forget to mention your tech stacks in the CV.

Having a good resume is a tricky one. Unless you're a veteran in the field, you'll have to tailor your resume before sending it to a job application. Every job application is different on its own. Some companies emphasize knowledge in C++ or C#, others emphasize experience in RPG games, etc... Companies look for very specific things when posting job applications, let them know how can you suit their specific needs.

Something that I like to do when I'm on an interview is to ask questions. Sometimes I ask more questions than the interviewer. What is the demands of the job? What are the benefits? What are the worst things about working at the company? I will even ask the interviewee questions about themselves - what games do they like, what's their experience, how do they like to work? An interview should never be a one-sided experience. You need to find out as much about the company you are trying to get a job with as possible. Sometimes you might find out that the company just isn't for you. It's ok to walk away from an opportunity that isn't right. It's better to work somewhere where you will be happy.

Giving interviews is really important. Even if you don't ace it. Keep giving Interviews because it increases you self confidence and you keep getting better at proving yourself. You have technical expertise but some employers want a good behavior in an employee. Smile and keep eye contacts and keep your mind present

It may take several attempts to land a entry gaming role as the industry is not in a good place now as a whole, but as long as there is a will, there will always be a way. I have known of cases where it took people more than a year of constant searching and applying before they got the job. There are also others I know of that willingly migrated overseas to target gaming studios that were actively hiring there. Remember, what matters is not the number of times you fall down...but rather whether you can keep getting back up again and going at it!

Small efforts over time amount to a lot, so don't underestimate the power of small efforts. Whatever you do, don't lose sight of what you love, that's the only thing that'll keep you going north.

All of the above & then some. Portfolio needs to be quality over quantity, you need to keep your resume & skills up-to-date, you must be applying + attending any Gaming events possible for direct face time with Studios, & you have to be actively networking. Be direct in your communication, master the STAR format for interviews, & be respectful when networking. A lot, right? Be ready to complete & repeat this cycle A LOT when looking to land that first role in Games. For some, it’ll be an easier / shorter hiring cycle. For others, it could take months or years & be a very, very difficult path… if you’re down to play the hiring game, the end rewards are extremely fruitful!

That way, when a job opportunity does arise, you will be ready to prove that you can do the job. You will know how to use the tools, you will know good practices of level design.
