When my major defense company site was preparing for layoffs, we made a point to get them information as it became available. This included when layoffs were expected to start, what the numbers would likely be, and how we determined who would be laid off. Newly hired? Performance low-scorers? Once layoffs began to be imminent, we shared what resources would help those who were due to be laid off. Sometimes these folks could transfer to another location, retire, or just use the resources to get their duck in a row for their next job. Know what the WARN act is.

More than that, your employees can be your brand ambassadors, think of them as microinfluencers. What can they say of your brand in their personal media that's good about this? Keep them updated, because they are your best asset.

While addressing these pain points, it is also important to parallelly plug the leak within the organisation. Mere reassurance to employees alone will not stop the leak. Something more has to be done to avoid further leak in the first instance and to avert a recurrence. There should be effective feedback mechanism to identify the leak (person or process) and fix it. The legal and data security teams would be able to play an instrumental part here.
