Here's how you can cultivate purpose and meaning in employees' work in Philanthropy.
In the world of philanthropy, fostering a sense of purpose and meaning in your employees' work isn't just about making them feel good—it's about amplifying the impact of your charitable efforts. When employees connect deeply with the mission, they bring passion and innovation to their roles. This is especially true in philanthropy, where the work directly affects the well-being of others and the planet. By cultivating a workplace that values each individual's contributions and aligns personal goals with organizational objectives, you can create a powerful force for change.

To cultivate purpose and meaning in your employees' work, start by ensuring that everyone understands and aligns with your philanthropic organization's vision. Clearly communicate how each role contributes to the overarching goals and the impact their work has on the community. When employees see how their daily tasks fit into the bigger picture, they are more likely to take ownership of their responsibilities and strive for excellence.

Step 1: Have a compelling purpose that truly inspires and energises people. Step 2: Don't assume that people get it and are aligned with it. Help them connect the dots between their work and the realisation of that purpose. Also help them align their personal goals/aims with the organisation's purpose. Step 3: Keep that purpose front and center daily, weekly, monthly, yearly by having it guide decision making, assessing progress towards it and sharing stories of how people throughout the organisation and stakeholders are making a difference.

Facilitating communities of shared purpose to inspire hope and address critical needs.
Vision is critical to inspire and create shared purpose amongst an organization and its team members. A compelling vision will provide the motivation and guiding light for teams to activate, as well as remind them of their "why."

First, start by having safe collective and individual conversations with employee groups that ask what changes have taken place in their communities in the past 2 years. Ask them if their personal passions for social good engagement have changed. Then do the same with your nonprofit partners. Find out what new challenges they are forecasting or are experiencing in other collaborative partnerships, due to changes occurring in the communities they serve. These insights will help your business better navigate changes that could alter the sustainable impact and participation drivers for employees.

Value Your People: Show employees that you appreciate them. When they feel valued, they are more likely to engage in charitable activities
Empowering your employees to share their ideas and feedback is crucial in building a sense of purpose. Encourage open dialogue and create channels for employees to express their thoughts on projects and initiatives. This not only fosters a collaborative environment but also makes employees feel valued and heard, which in turn, strengthens their connection to the work and the organization's mission.

Philanthropy is inherently a very relational art. Yes, there are absolute science and metrics around performance that are important, but they are also performative and connecting with donors requires emotional intelligence. Regularly bring staff together to check on their feelings about our approaches, what is working and what is not. Those that are Frontline and in the field, as well as advancement operations staff, should be given particular attention as they have tremendous insights. It’s our job in leadership to understand those insights and provide coaching to meet the gap between those insights and our strategic goals of the division, unit, organization for which we are raising funds

Investing in your employees' personal growth is a powerful way to infuse their work with purpose. Provide opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and skill-building that align with their interests and the needs of the organization. When employees feel that they are growing personally and contributing meaningfully, their engagement and satisfaction levels soar.

One thing I found that motivates employees during work and philanthropy is having a sounding board to work from. Fundraising, especially major gifts work, requires incredible amounts of critical thought. This is deep work and relationships can be complicated. It’s possible to assume or place where it really doesn’t exist when you recall what you heard in a meeting. Sometimes what you heard transforms and shifts overnight and when you wake up, you think you heard something different. The solution to this is to have a coach or reliable experienced sounding board. Executive coaches work extremely well for this, but also general fundraising coaches.

Remember, once people start getting involved, it often becomes a domino effect, creating a positive impact within your organization. 🌟
Recognition goes a long way in reinforcing the importance of your employees' work. Regularly acknowledge individual and team achievements, both big and small. Celebrate successes that have advanced your philanthropic mission and highlight how those accomplishments have made a difference. This not only boosts morale but also cements the idea that every effort counts towards the greater good.

One creative way to do this is to collect successes, collaborations, funny moments, and other items throughout the course of your fiscal year, and then put them together in the slideshow and feature it during a staff members annual Work anniversary. Work anniversaries have a duality where Staff recognize just how long they’ve been in an organization, but it’s also an opportunity to take stock in your purpose and direction in your professional career and sometimes even in life. To let these times go by without influencing them in someway it’s not only out of touch but also leaves you exposed to decrease satisfaction and in certain situations with additional challenges, possibly contributes to turnover

Often we don't consider the measurement of the "intangible" as well as the tangible impact that employees have on the ecosystem within a company. Find new ways to measure and share the achievements of employees. Developing a culture of collective collaboration in what that looks like will boost morale and provided healthy spaces for growth and competition.

Philanthropy has the power to influence lasting social change. When organizations receive support, a ripple effect takes place, touching many lives and potentially shaping generations. It can be seen as one of the cornerstones of a stable society. Additionally, impact-driven philanthropy thoughtfully and intentionally uses resources to advance equity, effectiveness, and systems change, creating better outcomes for communities and our world.

Strengthening the connection between your employees and the community you serve deepens the sense of purpose in their work. Facilitate direct interactions with beneficiaries, organize volunteer days, or host community events. These experiences can provide valuable insights into the real-world impact of your organization's efforts and inspire employees to further commit to their roles.

Develop a strategic focus discussion with your nonprofit partners. Find out what new challenges they are forecasting or are experiencing in other collaborative partnerships, due to changes occurring in the communities they serve. As economies shift and political administrations on local levels change, so do the needs and access of communities. These strategic conversations will help your business better understand the navigation of the nonprofits as they serve a multiple of demographics, particularly around grant based funding and impact investments.

Lastly, ensure that your organization's practices and workplace culture reflect the values you champion. A philanthropic organization should be an exemplar of ethical behavior, inclusivity, and social responsibility. When employees see that their employer embodies the principles it stands for, they are more likely to feel proud of their work and driven by a shared sense of purpose.
