Make use of your external eye; Think outside the box; Take a helicopter view; Make sure you have enough data before suggesting solutions; Formulate suggestions rather than solutions.

When I first started out as an intern at Citi, the biggest lesson I learnt was, when there is a problem to solve: a. understand the problem b. ask relevant questions if still unclear c. come up with possible solutions or recommendations d. communicate, communicate, communicate.

I find that an idea is pressure tested and made more robust when you bounce it off with colleagues from different functions, especially Legal. Do this before sharing it with the manager.

Sometimes interns can lack confidence to speak up early in their career. Your fresh perspective is as valuable as anyone in your workplace. - Be courageous to put forward potential ideas and solutions. - Seek input from a range of diverse people. - Be open to your ideas being challenged. - Be creative in evolving your ideas to consider other perspectives and new information. - Be willing to try, test and learn.

Never start from scratch. Push the envelope with strategic prompts to a Generative AI application to expand your idea set. Use these ideas only (at least in this maturity state, accuracy and currency of data for Gen AI applications) to start your solution set. Then apply your own experience, insights and creativity alongsode available/relevant data and problem statements to generate solutions.

I agree it’s very important to collaborate and to offer solutions. Nothing has to be perfect. Let people know that these are ideas that you’re thinking about and invite their contribution. Teamwork is the foundation not competition.

Get clarity on the root of the problem; this can include research, asking questions, careful investigation, looking at the history,etc...It helps to understand * how we got here*. Once the above is achieved we proceed on decisions of what to do and how to do it. This involves a whole lot of inputs, sieving/ filtering inorder to arrive at a very pure angle or direction to follow. We now follow up with communication or making everyone involved/ team on the way forward or proffering the solutions to the problem after careful analysis, active listening to all stakeholders

When we are confronted with daunting tasks, it’s the spirit of enthusiasm, not avoidance, that propels us forward. It’s at the edge of our comfort zone where learning and growth thrive. Like muscles that require stretching and rest to gain strength, our mental faculties too need challenges paired with recovery to expand. Be eager to keep wearing the learning hat. Be curious and try to network internally with various folks to understand their perspective. Try to break down problems into smaller bits and don’t shy away from asking questions & support from the team members. As an intern you are not expected to build rockets but they definitely want to see how you culturally fit their environment. Raising hand and helping your team in any way can help to build credibility and ofcourse the project or task which you are given should be worked with absolute confidence, sincerely and professionally. Remember it’s not the end solution only but the process on how you managed the challenge will make the difference of getting a permanent place in that team.

A can do approach is highly motivating when you are engaged in a solution and on a problem solving mission. How can you collaborate with others and bring people along in the process. Business challenges are varied and unique and you may be able to benchmark your findings and create a solution for other projects and issues as they arise. Again, ask for support and help when needed and making mistakes and pivoting is all a part of the learning journey

While clarity is important in communication, it is a skill which can be learned. However as an Intern two other qualities are needed for effective communication. 1. Candor: This depends on your attitude and courage to speak what is correct. Work with a mentor to guide you and encourage you to use candor in your communication. 2. Judgement: This is equally key to decide when to use candor and when to be discrete. When leaders ask you about the problem it is better to be candid. Focus on the What than on Who.

My first experience as an intern in the corporate world was at WeWork Mexico. And yes, it was a challenge. I remember being super nervous on my onboarding session! 😖 That’s when I met the HR Manager. She taught me one of the most valuable communication skills when working for someone else: when you get a task, always ask for due dates and priority rate. 3 things I’ve found helpful: 1) take lot of notes during meeting so you can absorb and reference after the fact 2) ask lots of questions to ensure you truly understand the challenge at hand or how you can contribute 3) if assigned a task, make sure to confirm goals, action items and deadlines so you’re aligned Communicate early and often. Make sure all those you’re working with have clear line of sight on why and what you’re doing.

Communication is the most under-valued discipline in business. It works both ways - you have to be clear you understand what is being asked of you AND communicate what you intend to do. Nothing lands worse than putting a ton of time into an irrelevant or inappropriate work stream.

Facing obstacles and challenges, and thinking of practical solutions for them, is a continuous process of learning and improvement. Always look for opportunities in the crises and difficulties you encounter; they are a great treasure for improving your skills, sharpening your thinking, and increasing your mental flexibility. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek out information, read, and ask for advice and counsel from others to obtain answers and resolve these problems. This will increase your efficiency and expertise over time, making a significant difference and ensuring that your organization values you for your ability to find solutions and think practically.

No matter what your experience level always strive to learn the open to new suggestions and welcome communication. Learn from your Interactions and be proactive.

As someone on a practical learning and exposure journey it's important to remember that the people in the organisation with more experience, regardless of qualifications, will typically have a lot of valuable insights to offer. Learn as much as you can from more experienced colleagues and mentors to fully understand the status-quo and apply your own knowledge and training to contribute to the work environment and processes

As an intern you are there to learn. If your mentors are good they will put you through learning situations that will test your critical thinking skills. To show case your problem solving skills first understand the problem statement and then list down all issues that can arise because of this. List down possible solutions. Propose these clearly, concisely along with case studies if you can find them.

The interns who I have worked with who have been successful went beyond looking at what has happened but have asked why. They don’t just ask it once, but continue to dig until they get to the root cause. When they propose a solution, they are also not afraid to ask then what.
