In my experience, there is so much power and promise in collaboration, connection, dialogue, and seizing the opportunity to harness the unlimited potential in maximizing the energy of thought-provoking questioning within any given space. To create a culture of that kind of an atmosphere is truly the ideal. When it is not the culture, stakeholders are very uncomfortable with that kind of dynamic. They really do not know how to react when those kinds of behaviors are going on because it’s completely foreign. I’ve been in both kinds of settings. When the higher level questioning exists, there is a true electricity that goes on in the room. One idea can completely be a spark that ignites a pattern of contagious innovation…it’s remarkable!

Beyond participating in courses and conferences, where I have typically had the opportunity to learn more, it has been through interaction with my colleagues at work. By working together on projects where we have the opportunity to collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner, knowledge and skills are developed that are reinforced through practice. And additionally, the social bond is increased, which strengthens relationships at work.

I have often found that it has been in those precious reflective moments that true meaning making has occurred for me both personally and professionally. I would NEVER relinquish the time spent in becoming a reflective thinker because that is precisely what has made me who I am today. Time is such a precious commodity…always give that gift to yourself because reflective thinking is about self awareness. It is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. Reflective thinking is to really intimately understand HOW we think, feel, believe, connect, understand, make meaning, process, evolve, communicate, resist, express our boundaries, and let others know exactly what we stand for.
