When I am coaching IT professionals, I ask them what they think their ultimate job will be, the job they could see as the pinnacle of their career. It is ok if they don't have immediate specific answer, but to help them move to their next step I feel that we need to start with the end in mind and work backwards. That focuses the next step in the direction of where they want to go. Then we can focus on what skills are needed for that next step they can sharpen or develop to be ready when the opportunity to move forward arrives.

Direto ao ponto: quais as opções para atualização das habilidades? Autodesenvolvimento ou desenvolvimento tutorado? Depende muito da sua disciplina. Vantagens do autodesenvolvimento: ritmo próprio, flexibilidade e menor custo. Vantagens do desenvolvimento tutorado: maior rapidez no aprendizado, estrutura de aprendizado já pronta e trocas espontâneas de experiências. Qual o melhor? Não há um melhor, mas sim o que é possível. O que não muda é que precisa se atualizar.

From my experience, a solid professional network is based on meaningful relationships with people I respect as experts in their field and whose opinions I trust. I focus on maintaining connections with smart, passionate professionals who are genuinely dedicated to their work. I don’t believe in collecting contacts for the sake of it, especially if I’ve never met them or if they’re primarily networking for recruitment or sales. Additionally, finding groups that share your professional interests is a great way to expand your network. By connecting with other IT Managers, sharing experiences, and comparing war stories, you will gain fresh perspectives and discover new approaches to common challenges.

Please consider to build your network mainly around trust. Second remind yourself to be in service in first place. Why? You will learn by doing so. But from my perspective this key is opening doors and stairways to real success.

The best profile for an IT manager is generally perceived as someone with a strong technical background plus some leadership skills. For me, it should be the contrary: The main mission of an IT manager is build a strong and cohesive team of skilled people able to work together with a shared vision, able to care for the wellness of each other and able to deliver value to the organisation (my own definition, please comment 😉). This doesn’t require any technical knowledge and technical aspects should not divert the IT manager from him main mission. The time spent by the IT manager on technical issues is not spent in inspiring, mentoring, empowering, energising, guiding, … his teams…

Building leadership skills is crucial for IT managers as they play a pivotal role in guiding their teams towards success and often more than not, IT managers focus on technical skills. IT managers should work on their leadership skills not only through training but coaching and mentoring as its critical for their teams to enhance their abilities in conflict resolution, team motivation, and strategic planning. These skills not only improve team dynamics and productivity but also ensure that the IT department aligns with the broader organizational goals. Ultimately, strong leadership in IT can lead to more innovative solutions, higher employee satisfaction, and a competitive edge in the technology landscape.

No ambiente de TI, o conhecimento técnico é essencial, mas não suficiente para garantir o sucesso em cargos gerenciais. A liderança é uma habilidade indispensável, exigindo mais do que domínio de tecnologias. Gerentes de TI precisam inspirar suas equipes, comunicar-se claramente e tomar decisões estratégicas. Have a good reflection on the difference between management and leadership. The leader can drive change and take you to a new destination. The skills required for leadership are many but include communication, stakeholder management, problem solving and talent development.

I think it’s natural to lose sight of the fact that a strategic move doesn’t always have to be upward… Often times the best moves are lateral to grow in your depth and breath of knowledge. When you are ready for the upward move, you have more tools in your tool belt to support that progression. And if you don’t have the opportunity for a lateral move, you always have the opportunity to educate yourself on those lateral skills and still have that knowledge in your résumé to help build your career progression when jobs opportunities are limited.

This one is critical, you have to avoid burnout and protect your own mental health. Long hours with no break or constantly working overtime will impact your day-to-day persona over time. If you finish at 5 then make sure you do, save the additional work for when its critical. Make sure you get downtime without interruption and ensure someone else on the team knows how to do your tasks in case its required. Document even the most basic things you do so that they can be done by someone else if you are away.
