Here's how you can turn failure into a valuable learning experience and use it to your advantage.

Although it is cliche, “failing fast” can be a good thing. But it’s only a good thing if you fail, learn why you failed, and then apply those lessons learned to a new pathway or strategy. If we don’t accept reality, and that doesn’t mean give up the first time something doesn’t work, you are investing precious time and resources in a dead-end. As humans, we are bad at accepting failure and hold on to sunk costs… let go of that behavior and fail and learn to reach success.

It doesn't feel great to be disillusioned, but it's a lot better than being "illusioned"! Not all models work and real learning comes from failure. One learns nothing when everything goes according to plan. The real-world pressures of model failure can be tough, but it's not all bad, and one can take solace in that.

Two pieces of advice I always give about failures - If you aren't failing, you aren't pushing the boundaries. You should fail sometimes. When working with fast moving/advancing technology like AI, failure is even more likely. - Fail fast, know when to pull the plug and pull it. Don't let ego get in the way. Fail, learn and move froward The biggest question is, did you learn from your failures, the answer to this should always be yes.

Facing failure can be best illustrated through the experience of a door-to-door salesperson. For instance, if a salesperson visits 10 doors and 8 open, 6 people like the product, 4 negotiate, and 2 make a purchase, the net profit is $1000. Here, the net profit per door is $100. Even if not every door leads to a sale, each visit contributes to earning, demonstrating that there is no such thing as failure—only opportunities for learning and improvement.

Analyzing errors and data is the day-to-day of our jobs, but this task has become more elusive in recent times when working with non-deterministic models like LLMs, you need to analyze more difficult data (complex text), and the errors could be more subjective than you might think. In my experience, I perform a combination of manual and automated evaluation, after all, LLMs are good at evaluating all kinds of text data. For that, I use awesome tools and frameworks like LangSmith, Giskard, and Ragas. Give those a try and always incorporate some type of evaluation in your Gen AI apps so you can evade future and more critical errors.

The root cause analysis to understand the failure's origin often entails scrutinizing data pipelines, model parameters, and algorithmic biases. Identifying and correcting these root causes fortifies your AI systems, enabling them to evolve and improve iteratively.

Iterate and Improve: Data science involves constant experimentation. Use the insights gained from failures to refine your models, algorithms, and approaches. Iterative improvements often lead to breakthroughs that wouldn't be possible without initial setbacks.

Conduct a detailed analysis of what went wrong. Identify specific mistakes, gaps in knowledge, or faulty assumptions that led to the failure. This process not only provides clarity but also offers actionable insights for future projects. In my case, we discovered that insufficient training data and a flawed feature selection process were key issues. By understanding these errors, we adjusted our approach and significantly improved our model’s performance in subsequent projects. It is very important to test various algorithms before finding the best one, ensuring that the data set is correct and that the features are being used appropriately, and that the feature selection was accurate. From there, you can revise your approach strategy and test the results to achieve the desired outcome.

Having analyzed the mistakes you made, pinpoint what has to change in your approach. Develop new strategies that fill in the lapses or voids that caused the situation to fail. Hearing about successes is a dime a dozen, hearing about failures is much rarer but much more valuable. Share your challenges and failures with colleagues and industry professionals. You will usually find people go out of their way to be helpful when asked about a failure (see my first sentence above!). Outsiders and those more distant from your work will provide a fresh and candid outlook. They may have technical, process, management or other advice. In a rapidly moving area like AI, sharing your failures and learning about others is invaluable.

I always ask for help if I can, why would you not take advice from someone that already achieved what you are looking for. If you have the chance of have these persons around you, just be humble and start with "I need to ask you a stupid question but ...", they always respond "there is not such things as stupid questions ...". Stole my trick :)

Build Resilience: Failure helps in building resilience. The ability to bounce back from setbacks and continue working towards your goals is a crucial trait for any data scientist. It strengthens your problem-solving skills and enhances your ability to tackle complex challenges.

Seek input from team members, stakeholders, and end-users. Their perspectives can highlight overlooked issues or opportunities for improvement. For example, feedback from operational teams revealed usability issues in a deployed AI system.

Seeking feedback after encountering setbacks in AI projects is invaluable for growth and improvement. Peers and mentors can offer objective perspectives that may uncover blind spots or highlight alternative approaches not previously considered.

Develop a detailed implementation plan outlining the changes needed. Prioritize changes based on their impact and feasibility. For example, prioritize addressing critical model performance issues first.Communicate upcoming changes to stakeholders, including team members, clients, and end-users. Clearly articulate the rationale behind changes and address any concerns or questions proactively.

The goal is to use what you've learned from failures in a careful, step-by-step way. Each change should help improve your AI, turning past mistakes into future successes.
