How can you develop your cybersecurity skills?

One thing I have learned along the way to learning cybersecurity is that having a growth mindset is crucial. It allows you to approach self-assessment positively, viewing gaps in knowledge as opportunities for growth. With a growth mindset, you embrace challenges, seek learning opportunities, and adapt to new information. By adopting a growth mindset, you take control of your development and cultivate resilience and a thirst for knowledge. This mindset, combined with effective assessment strategies, will lead you to success in the field of cybersecurity.

I think the most important is consistency. If you do 1 hour or more on a certain tool or frameworks or even any other issue in cybersecurity daily, you will see the change. Trust me it works!.

I have learned so much about cybersecurity by exploring the basics. This has given me a solid foundation for understanding the CIA triad, common cyberattacks, security hygiene, and legal/ethical issues. It has given me the ability to architect effective security, identify ad hoc mitigation, and maintain integrity and privacy. This journey has made me more aware, accountable and driven in the cybersecurity industry.

When I started in cybersecurity, practicing my skills in safe environments was essential. Platforms like TryHackMe, HackTheBox, and CyberStart provided realistic challenges. Engaging with online communities like Discord allowed me to learn from others and gain valuable feedback. Practicing in this way made learning relatable and boosted my problem-solving abilities. It was a transformative experience that shaped my perspective on the practical aspects of cybersecurity.

Book learning simply does not address the necessary skills. Even certifications (unless practical rather than conceptual) are not overly beneficial. I have plenty, mostly for the buzzword that recruiters look for. Certifications help in the work marker, but are truly inconsequential in the actual sector. Spend a little time in the "grey" area, watching, learning, and asking. You learn by seeing what the attackers do and necessary skills. There has been a criminal sector since the beginning of time with many analogies, but I believe the Stones said it best "Just as every cop is a criminal..." You have to think and understand to stop. A piece of paper will not address that. The paper gets you a job, the skills are on you...

Obtaining cybersecurity certifications was a game-changer for me, especially when it came to securing my first job. Online platforms offer a wide range of courses and videos to keep professionals updated. I attend webinars and workshops so as I can learn from experts and discover new tools. Following industry blogs and newsletters keeps me informed about the latest trends. Joining professional associations like ISACA and (ISC)² offers networking and educational resources. Engaging in Capture the Flag challenges and contributing to open-source projects on GitHub allows me to gain practical experience and collaborate with peers. Continuous learning ensures I stay competitive and equipped to address emerging threats in cybersecurity.
