How can you follow workplace safety guidelines?

As part of a leadership team, I feel responsible and accountable about workplace fatey rules respect.To achieve this I had to put in place routines on daily, weekly and Monthly basis to review safety performance of the plant and to discuss new standards, gaps, deviations....initiatives...etc. I got to know in details what are the requirements and how to comply with them. So leading by example, I strongly believe, i have to be the one seen in front and fully abiding by the rules and standards.

In my practice I always try to make rules as clear and concise; clear rules have no room for misinterpretation and concise rules are easier to communicate to a diverse workforce with varying expertise, job level and proficiency.

Following the Workplace Safety Guidelines will be much easier where there is an unwavering Management Commitment to Safety, because it's their primary responsibility to make the workplace safe for workers, enact safety policies, set the safety targets & goals and make sure that they are well and adequately communicated to workers. Information dissemination, Trainings, Motivations and Consequence Management are also important aspect that could enhance good adherence to workplace safety guidelines. Feedback from incidents investigations also helps to improve workers awareness on the inherent risk associated to their jobs and how to mitigate them.

In my experience communicating risks effectively and the intent behind rules and guidelines is key success factor for implementation

Knowledge of hazards at any individual's workplace has to be communicated to him/her and then the controls from the risk assessment also communicated. This would make individuals make informed decisions about how to treat or terminate hazards before they turn into accidents at the workplace. I emphasize training and training, then supervision on top of it, then people will follow the necessary rules put in place to ensure the safety of all.

The primary consideration in using different personal protective equipments, tools, machine and other supportive equipment to workers is that the employees must have the basic knowledge how to use it. This is to ensure that it will be effective and efficient on the side of the worker and its productivity.

It all starts with investing time in good work preparation. This is often forgotten in order to 'save' time and start quickly with the work. The result is the contrary, by investing time in preparation before the job starts, you will accomplish your job faster (and safer)

Proper training and supervision is extremely important while exposing to new workplace conditions to ensure right procedures and safety measures are followed.

The use of PPE is a fundamental aspect of workplace safety that protects worker's health, ensures regulatory compliance, and promotes a productive work environment. Workers that feel safe and protected are more likely to be efficient.

Critical part to ensure that workers are following the procedures will fall greatly on the workers attitude towards his/her work. This can be consider as difficult modifiable factor because even if you have provided all the necessary trainings, information, SOPs on that specific work tasks there is still near miss, incident or accident that may possibly happen. Unsafe act is still the main point about this.

Following of procedures is tricky as there are many factors why accidents happen related to procedure misinterpretation thats why it has to have clarity to leave no room for misinterpretation; ensuring that everyone understands what is expected of them. Lastly, it is important for maintaining a compliant and standardized working environment, removing hazards, reducing risks and a protected workforce and working environment.

To obtain a mature safety culture where procedures are followed, employees have to be strongly supported on this and see that the management walks the talk. Safety is more important than milestones that have to be obtained, people have the right to stop the work when they can't do it safely or even when they have a doubt. This has to be fully supported by the management. However, if this is the case, deviations should not be accepted or tolerated.

Supervising the Health and Safety (COVID) Department on a Hollywood studio set can be intimidating. Dealing with union workers and high-stakes deadlines can add pressure to interactions regarding protocol. When an issue arises with an individual, often there is resistance to instruction and an opportunity is lost. On an individual basis, I’ve found compassion to be the most effective means of protocol enforcement & and compliance. Most of the time, a simple conversation (as peers) often solves any misunderstanding or issue with the protocols. Implementing calm, kind, and empathic enforcement throughout the department made it possible to ensure our protocols were followed and a safe work environment was maintained.

If you come to work with a positive attitude following procedures will be satisfying but that does not mean that a near miss or incident/ accident is not bound to happen, U are the following procedure but that does not mean the person working at above you feel the same way that day. In my experience I have seen Safety officer wanting to tell a boilermaker how to do his job, but that safety officer is there to help people and not tell them how to do their job.

First, make sure you are aware of the specific workplace safety guidelines and regulations relevant to your industry and job. This may include OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations in the United States or similar authorities in other countries. Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear the necessary PPE for your job. This can include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, ear protection, and respiratory protection.

By reporting all incidents (near misses, unsafe acts, ...) you contribute to a long lasting safety culture. There are a lot of digital tools nowadays to facilitate this and to analyse what has been reported. The ratio's are 1 fatality = 400 LT accidents = 20.000 minor injuries = 240.000 near misses = 2 million unsafe acts. By focussing on the unsafe acts, companies can improve their safety approach based leading indicators (future oriented, where do we want to go, prevention) instead of lagging indicators (based on accidents in the past)

In my experience, workplaces should also add in an option to report unsafe acts in the workplace anonymously to ensure that workers are empowered to report undesirable behaviour without fear of reprisals.

Failing to report safety issues makes the workplace unpleasant to work in and puts everyone at risk of injury. It is imperative that employees understand the importance of reporting issues before they escalate into incidents, which could pose liabilities to the company.

Listening to feedback is important in understanding what the hazards and risks are. Workers who do the work often have also thought of the best solutions. Seeking their feedback is key to improving health and safety.

Feedback and communication about workplace safety procedures is important for all parties involved. Workers can better understand procedures and prioritize safety with helpful feedback, instruction, and even demonstration from supervisors and managers, but also supervisors and managers should be open to feedback from workers. Those that perform tasks and work in an environment everyday are likely to have insight on what is working, and where there may room for improvement. Supervisors and managers that best understand the reasoning for certain procedures which may seem unnecessary to a worker, could help the workers prioritize all steps in the procedures better by providing the appropriate feedback. Communication is key.

Continous improvement in workplace safety is a proactive approach that protects not only the workforce but also reduces costs, promotes productivity and efficiency, compliance to regulatory requirements and adaptation to changes that make a workplace more safe.

New technologies are allowing us to improve a lot regarding safety (machines, digital applications, online information support, virtual reality trainings, drones,...) It will never stop and we should never stop improving our way of working.

We have to foster a culture where safety is a top priority. Encourage open communication about safety concerns and provide incentives for safe behavior.

Safety starts with organisational culture and culture starts from the top. Management then has the ethical, moral and legal responsibility to develop and ensure that systems, checks and balances are in place which match the culture so that workers can be kept safe. Daily practice is influenced by actual rather than written priorities. Adherence to policies and procedures, SWM’s and JSA’s are influenced by perceived value in doing so. If desired culture and worker daily practice do not align I would look first at the culture and what has motivated the behaviour.

Focus on the vital role psychological safety plays in policy improvement. Leaders must set the tone by being approachable and encouraging open dialogue. Implement regular check-ins and anonymous surveys to gauge employee sentiment on existing policies. Crucially, act on the feedback received; this demonstrates that you value and respect your employees' input. Training managers on the tenets of psychological safety can also go a long way. By fostering a culture where employees feel safe to voice their concerns, you pave the way for effective and meaningful changes in policies and procedures.

Using power tools requires caution at all times. A friend of mine cut his hand badly with a circular saw. He was in a hurry and did not pay attention to the safety rules. This incident taught me the importance of being careful. When you use power tools, you should always wear the appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, goggles, and earplugs. You should also read the manual of the tool carefully and follow the safety instructions exactly. Moreover, you should check and maintain your tools regularly to avoid any malfunctions. These precautions are not optional; they are your duty. By sharing this story, I hope to warn you that ignoring safety measures when using power tools can have serious consequences.
