How can you increase your chances of getting a promotion in e-commerce?

🧐Is it any different to get a promotion in e-commerce compared to other areas? I don’t think so. The basics are quite the same. I agree that having a clear realistic career plan helps, but on the other hand things not always work out as planned 😅 So for me, the key thing is to be open to different options and be transparent with your manager and team.

I believe we can summarize the knowledge needed in 2 categories groups: 1) e-commerce knowledge from marketing to logistics, from analytics to pricing. 2) tech knowledge - with limited tech knowledge you won’t fly high in e-commerce careers. Be tech (know how to do a query, work with postman, access a data Lake, etc) is mandatory. Besides the softskill you need in all other careers, in e-commerce you need to be specialist (tech + digital commerce) Don't migrate from marketing offline to e-commerce and apply the same tactics. Be humble to learn. If you want a promotion, show empirical knowledge. If you don't feel humble and hunger to learn technology and a new science (digital commerce), you are not ready for e-commerce career.

I always feel there are 3 Stakeholders in this kind of process. First:- You got to be aware of your strengths and gaps for growth. Employees who take the initiative to analyze themselves and start their learning journey, self-motivated to bridge the learning gaps for growth are the ones who are putting out positive vibes. Vibes that say, I know where I stand, I am keen to learn, committed and self-motivated and want to create an impact. Second:- After working on yourself work on the company, its visions, and aspirations. You need to match it, align with it, and work to make it better. Third:- The customer. Know the customers, their journey, their needs and wants, and their buying behaviors and patterns. Empathise and be transparent.

I have been into E-commerce since 5 years and in 2021, I got promoted within 8 months and got the highest increment in the whole organisation, so here is what you can do: 1. become an expert in 1 skill, and make sure your team/manager/company is dependant on you 2. you take challenges, experiment regularly, take ownership, help team members, work with 100% honesty 3. The manager should look up to you to ease off his/her work because you work like a champion 4. Be very data-oriented, and understand the customer signals 5. You should be very clear of your professional goals and do not hesitate to ask for a promotion/better hike if you feel you deserve it 6. Accept if you are wrong, take feedback very seriously and work on it

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry trends and innovations. Showcase your ability to drive results by consistently meeting or exceeding targets. Seek opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and show leadership qualities within your current role. Cultivate strong communication skills, collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, and highlight your problem-solving abilities. Stay proactive in updating your skills particularly in areas such as digital marketing, analytics, and e-commerce platforms. Showcase a commitment to the company's success and seek feedback to continuously improve. Developing a strategic mindset can also significantly contribute to your advancement.

Someone once told me… “Say yes, and figure it out later.” I believe that can apply here. ECommerce is forever evolving and new tools are always popping up. Be willing to be uncomfortable with trying something new… it’ll be challenging to start, but with practice and just doing, you’ll master it. When you’re a person that’s willing to do the dirty work that other aren’t, on top of emerging trends/tools, figure out a solution to a new problem, and are self-sufficient because you’ve taken the time to learn new skills… you’re an A-player in eComm. A-players deliver results. It’s hard to deny that combination a promotion.

Upskill in the areas you enjoy the most, while being good at them, while they are also in-demand skills within your company (and ecom companies as a whole). There's no point in getting good at coding if there are no coding opportunities, and you would have to start from scratch to get a job in this area. Improve in skills that are "sought after" and will help your career progress while allowing you to do something you enjoy! Don't just focus on the potential of higher earnings - focus on what makes YOU tick! Get better at the things where you are consistently in a "flow state" - almost as if it's effortless and something that doesn't drain you.

If you're good at your job, you'll be asked to do more, which is daunting. Accepting challenges (without much complaining) and continuing to learn increases your value to the company. When people come to you with questions day after day, you'll know you're a key member of the team. Make sure management sees that.
