I would consider more operation with cameras instead of Lidar sensor. Today's known algorithms of machine vision with use of neural networks are much more efficient and bringing satisfied results in mobile robotics applications. The best example is Tesla autopilot when Lidar was rejected and only cameras are used to predict next steps on road and added to decision system in self driving control algorithms.
