How can you stay ahead of the curve in mechanical design?

Figure out how to utilize AI to create 3D CAD models. That would be a major step in the right direction. I should be able to say “create a protrusion 30mm diameter x 10mm high a this surface at this point and done”. Okay, simplified example but just think if you could conceptualize a geometry and the 3D CAD software could just create it. Wow, would that be cool or what?

To stay ahead in mechanical design, We must; Prioritise continuous learning, adopt the latest technology and maintain a hoilistic understanding of the industry. Regular engagement through workshops, courses and industry events combined with leveraging advanced design and simulation tools will ensure relevance. Further more focusing on sustainable practices, broadening skill sets and understanding global trends will provide a competitive edge. Collaboration, feedback and hands on experience are also pivotal to effective design.

In my experience learning new software can be very useful if it is something that you will be using in your day-to-day job, or at least on a semi-regular basis. If it isn’t something you will be using regularly I think often it can be wasted time as you rarely develop as a user when you aren’t using the software regularly.

To “stay ahead of the curve,” you cannot allow your agency to be constrained by structure. Always remember, software is a tool. Tools are designed to make common jobs more efficient. To “stay ahead of the curve” means venturing into the uncommon. Know your first principles, know how to do engineering calculations by hand. Do not allow software limitations to constrain your design.

I disagree with this. To “stay ahead of the curve,” you cannot allow your agency to be constrained by structure. Industry standards are by definition structure. You cannot solve problems under the same system that created them. Solve the problem outside of these constraints and then check the solution against the standards. If a solution can be tweaked to fit a standard without compromising value, do it. If the solution violates a standard, prove an equivalent level of safety, quality, or reliability. If the solution has no applicable standard, you have innovated, and you are “ahead of the curve.”

In mechanical engineering, understanding standards is key. Don't just follow them blindly; analyze them critically to glean valuable insights and identify potential gaps. By considering multiple standards, you gain a broader perspective and can develop innovative solutions. This approach empowers you to move beyond compliance and become a leader in your field.

It’s very important to know and apply the standards and codes in your area of mechanical design…we need to have a time to study the stadards and codes, it’s must be a goal in our development process. It will give you an advantage in your professional life.

Feedback and improvement: I would say: “seek wisdom, above all else”. Me (CAD engineer) have absolutely no shame if a worker in our factory corrects me for making a mistake. It happens, and I'm thankful for correcting me, because next time I will be more careful not repeating it. There is only one value for me, how much a person knows. If someone has ego or charisma, I see it as a weakness, because only rational decisions and thoughts should prevail. Mentoring: I'm 27 years old and have a pupil who wants to study mechanical engineering (he's 18). Above all, I'm controlling my emotions, and I'm always kind to him. I love the fact he wants to learn, and I'm honored that he wants to learn from me.

Although I studied mechanical engineering and mechatronics, I didn't find aspiration in those 2 fields but rather in the field of electricity. I've read books from Nikola Tesla, Charles Proteus Steinmetz, Maxwell, Faraday, Hertz and many others. Instead of digging into new technologies I asked myself, what is a unit of 1 Volt, Ampere, what is electricity (magnetism + dialectricity), what effect do magnets have on a living system,... Remarkable, everything in nature is connected. The question comes, can someone explain with theories how nature works. If one theory cannot explain some natural phenomena, it's some kind of religion. Theories always starts and end with foundations.
