Typically PLM ( Product Life cycle management ) soft wares are best suitable for R& D. Since R& D has many interfaces with functions such as Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Marketing , it is very important to have interfaces and to have completed integration for seamless execution.

For R&D, I would not get stuck on "the best", but focus on what will work. By nature R&D is about discovery, risk reduction, and iteration. Be nimble, flexible and open. There will be opportunities to make it "the best" in follow on iterations. The best non working product is not the goal.

D'après mon expérience, mieux vaut plusieurs logiciels chacun spécialisé dans un type de tâche qu'une usine à gaz capable de tout (mal) faire. Le streamlining des processus se fait ensuite soit par des connecteurs disponibles directement dans chaque outil ... soit par le chef de projet ou son équivalent. Cela permet aux équipes de maximiser leur capacité à priduire en se concentrant sur les informations essentielles, sans friction inutile. Coming from two different startups, this extremely important but often not well implemented. ME will make comments on Solidworks. While the EE makes comments in Altium. Natively only SOME programs communicate with each other seamlessly. Communications softwares are getting better, but often times this relies on long nights by the IT professionals to make sure all the browser plug-ins and open sources softwares are doing what you'd like them to. So, chosing the software stack prior to starting the project can often make or break the project itself.

Project management is important, but a "Fail Fast" philosophy is critically important to a streamlined R&D project. If you aren't finding concepts that fail, then you aren't considering enough concepts. You won't innovate if your field of view is too narrow. "Fail Fast" process is a very light, agile process, and project managers need to appreciate the value in learning what DOESN'T work, and thus can be eliminated from available solution space.
