Struggling to unite medical staff and administrators in your healthcare team?

In my experience , many of the administrators are non medicos who have done their MBAs. Managing a healthcare facility is different from managing other establishments . Many a times , there is a rift between these administrators and clinicians - be it doctors , nursing management or technologists manning various equipment. Management always thinks about profitability of any move/decision which is plausible and understandable . Obviously , money matters !! No amount of meetings , feedback sessions will help unless the administration has an open mind . They should understand that healthcare industry has a very long incubation period. Multidisciplinary team approach only can improve and sustain high quality patient care on a long term.

Unite medical staff and administrators by promoting open communication, fostering mutual respect, and setting shared goals. Implement regular team meetings, encourage collaboration, and recognize contributions from all team members to build a cohesive and effective healthcare team.

Healthcare organisations can succeed or fail as a consequence of nature of relationship between managers and doctors. Hospital administrators often view physicians as people they must ‘‘manage,’’ not as potentially valuable strategic partners. The problem is that many physicians are not at all engaged. Hospitals can't really buy physician engagement, engagement stems from emotional attachment. Engaged physicians have a strong sense of ownership and connection with their health care organizations. Physicians must have a voice at the table where their opinions are heard.

I have observed and worked with these issues very closely. And one thing that worked and still works time and again is communication. We must appreciate that every person on your team comes fron different background and are performing different tasks each day. This itself creates a gap in the way people work and contribute. Bringing everyone to work towards a common goal requires deep work in communication skills. Institutes that have seen communication skills refinement as an investement have benefitted greately.

For instance, holding workshops where team members brainstorm and contribute ideas for the vision can be very effective. I'd identify individuals who naturally exhibit leadership qualities and provide them with opportunities to lead initiatives that require collaboration between the two groups. For example, creating cross-functional committees led by these empowered leaders can address common issues and develop integrated solutions. Providing leadership training and development programs ensures that these leaders are well-equipped to foster a collaborative environment. When leaders from both sides work together effectively, it sets a positive example for the entire team.

Para mejorar el compañerismo y el trabajo en equipo entre el personal médico y la administración, es fundamental invertir en educación continua. Al entender mejor las responsabilidades y los desafíos de cada función, esta inversión fomenta la empatía.
