What do you do if a client reveals they are experiencing domestic violence during an interview?

Confidentiality, safety, and respect are crucial to prevent further harm to the survivor. It is very important to NOT pressure them to file a police report or take legislative help. The first step is to listen, second step is to validate that this is wrong and under no scenario, do they deserve this type of treatment. Then, providing them with information on support options, which may include reporting to the police or other legal optiond. The whole time you have to allow them to process, think, and make decisions. If you think their life is in danger, then support them to make a safety plan.

As a clinical psychologist, I prioritize active listening when a client discloses domestic violence. This aligns with Dr.Linehan's emphasis on active listening within DBT. By creating a safe and supportive space through non-judgmental body language and verbal cues, I avoid interrupting or pressuring for details. Active listening also involves reflecting back what they've shared, ensuring they feel heard and understood. This validation of their experience is crucial, as it empowers them to take the next steps towards safety and healing. By prioritizing active listening, I build trust and create a collaborative environment where they can explore their options with confidence.

Active listening is such an underrated skill. If someone has trusted us enough to open up domestic violence, we owe them our undivided attention, empathy and acknowledgement. To listen actively means to listen to understand their experience in their unique context, not to respond or say the right thing. There is no right thing to say to someone who has endured/survived DV. Active listening allows for a genuine, reliable connection which is more helpful than providing solutions. Quick tip: Refrain from saying "I understand" because, do we really?

It's crucial to encourage and maintain confidentiality and respect their privacy while offering assistance and support. Seek help and assure them that their job interview will be kept confidential. It may be helpful to suggest contacting HR or the appropriate authorities for further assistance. Above all, show empathy and understanding towards the individual in this difficult situation

It is crucial for substance abuse treatment providers to learn if their clients are either perpetrators or victims of domestic violence as early as possible in the treatment process. iscussion of childhood abuse may open the door to discussion of current violence. In moving the interview from past to current violence, the possibility that they are survivors should be explored first, before questions about perpetrating violence themselves. This initial screening can be done by asking questions such as "Do you feel safe at home?" "Has anyone in your family ever physically hurt you?" "Has anyone in your family made you do sexual things you didn't want to do?" "Have you ever hurt anyone in your family physically or sexually?"

We must always be bound to our individual scope of practice. If you are not a qualified domestic violence advocate, it is inappropriate to attempt to develop a safety plan with a victim of domestic violence. Clients who are experiencing domestic violence should be referred to a qualified domestic violence advocate/organization.

Please let them know they can request an emergency protection order from law enforcement and or go to court for a restraining order. Let them know of shelter services and or various medical locations including therapists that they can consult with. Let them know of pro-bono lawyers, victims advocates, and or protective legal services. Also, in case there are children facing this such as teenagers then a mandated reporter can file SCAR form and call Child Protective Services.

You should firstly advise them that they should report the matter to police. This is the area a where this matter belongs. Whilst DV is a serious and dangerous situation it is also not the workplace’s direct responsibility to become involved. Empathy and understanding is vital but most importantly there is two sides to DV and the truth lies somewhere in between only known by the two parties involved know the real truth. The person you speak to will always have a version swayed closer to their side and benefit. Impartiality is essential and the employer should only get involved to the depth of their legal responsibility. This comes from almost 20 yrs of frontline general duties police work and as an employer.

Domestic Abuse takes several forms and often people believe in the absence of physical abuse there has been no abuse. This is not true as it can be in the form of coercive control, financial abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse. Over the years many clients have shared with me that they are suffering domestic abuse. I then set out their legal rights to them under the Family Law Act for injunctive relief in the form of a Non Molestation Order and Occupation Order. If secured, through the Courts this would prevent my client from suffering harm and such orders would also have a power of arrest. The Occupation order would mean that my client could continue to reside in the property without the perpetrator.
