What do you do if your public speaking event is disrupted by a heckler?

A smile allows you to pause and breathe and collect yourself. Then you go in to disarm with humour. In both large speaking engagements and in smaller training type settings, you may find a disruptive person, but great speakers are always ready to pull that deflection into the material and in so doing, disarm and diffuse the disruption.

Remain Calm: Stay composed and maintain your composure. It's natural to feel flustered or frustrated, but try to stay calm and focused on managing the situation. Don't Engage in Argument: Avoid getting into an argument or exchanging insults with the heckler. Engaging with them directly may escalate the situation and detract from your message. Acknowledge the Heckler: Acknowledge the heckler briefly and politely, but don't give them too much attention. You can say something like, "Thank you for your input, but let's try to keep the discussion respectful."

When a heckler interrupts your presentation, acknowledging them can prevent the situation from escalating. Briefly pause, make eye contact, and address their comment with a neutral, respectful tone. This can be as simple as saying, "I appreciate your view on this; let's discuss it further after the presentation." This acknowledges their presence and opinion without derailing your speech or giving them the platform to dominate. It's a balance between being dismissive and engaging too deeply. Your goal is to continue your presentation with minimal disruption, showing the audience your adaptability and professionalism.

You could "Thank" them for their feedback and continue with your planned speech. You can also inform them that you will take questions after the presentation. Make sure you keep moving forward, and do not let them stop you from sharing the rest of your talk.

Recognize that hecklers first and foremost want to be heard. While I admit I adore cutting off ill respect at the knees by lobbing a snarky retort, matching their brand of getting attention is not helpful and only fuels them. Taking control of the room means acknowledging their presence to diffuse them - saying something to the effect of, "That's interesting; tell us: why would you say that?" may disarm them, never expecting to be put in the position to be engaged. If they continue to heckle (and security hasn't reached them yet to remove them), the only response in a confident, professional voice louder than theirs would be, "Okay, we see you're not prepared to back up your claim with an intelligent response, so we're moving on..."

In my experience hecklers are more interested in their perspective than yours. Often their perspective is tangental to your subject matter. To avoid awkward moments and disincentivize communication you can practice the general retorts that people may have about your position. By engaging hecklers you give them credibilty but you also show that its possible to have constructive civil dialogue once others agree to the terms of that dialogue. Ultimately, you have the microphone and no one likes a bully! Public speaking requires that we show how conversations can take place while maintaining our poise and point during the event!

Carefully engaging with someone causing disruption is an art to master. In many events I've seen that the Speakers either ignore the hecklers altogether or respond with sarcasm. Hecklers can set you up or take you down. Depending on how you respond. Respond briefly and neutrally Redirect Don't Argue Utilize Silence During a workshop, a heckler challenged my viewpoints. With a light-hearted response, I deftly steered the conversation back to the topic at hand. The audience appreciated the redirection, reinforcing the importance of staying focused and composed in the face of disruptions.

Hecklers come in many forms but they all want attention. Try 3 counterstrategies: 1. Don't engage verbally. Stay silent + look their way. Your audience usually joins in to personify "if looks could kill" as most people are annoyed rather than amused with heckling. 2. Some hecklers are not malicious but simply clueless. You can poll the audience if you should skip this VERY interesting part of your talk so you can address the heckler's comment/question/concern - make it a rhetorical question. Then suggest that you talk 1-on-1 with the interrupter after the event. 3. Don't lose your cool! Your goal is to inspire/entertain/educate the audience, not to convert hecklers. Once you get emotionally involved, it's very hard to stay on your game.

Then again, you can do what great comedians do with hecklers... One comical response to a heckler was: "Hey, look, do I come in, sit down and heckle you when you're washing dishes at the Waffle House? If you don't like the show - move on..." Never lose your sense of humor.

Phrases like "Thank you for your comment, but let's move on" or "I'd be happy to answer questions at the end of my presentation" establish boundaries without resorting to aggression. Boundaries are something our society seems to struggle with, setting boundaries and respecting them. But as a speaker they are critical, how to set them in front of an audience: Politely redirect focus to presentation Express appreciation for engagement Remind audience you will allow time at the end Be an example of respectful communication During a conference keynote, a persistent heckler disrupted the flow. Firmly but courteously, I redirected attention to the presentation, emphasizing the importance of respectful engagement. The audience responded positively, understanding that boundaries ensure a productive and enriching experience for all.

If the event is being effectively organised then the speaker could step back and leave it to the event chair to address the heckler rather than the seeking engaging directly.

I like to be clear before the session gets started with setting some boundaries. That may include letting the audience know that if we move off topic or it's not relevant to the entire group, we will move on. Then there's no surprises if it comes up. If it happens, I also warn whoever has invited me that I may call on them to drive the session in the right direction. I like to offer the heckler an opportunity to discuss afterwards too.

Once the interruption is over, take a breath and return to your notes or script. If appropriate, I've found a lighthearted joke or acknowledgement of what's just happened can help put the audience back at ease.

Using time (or lack of) as a reason to keep moving forward with the presentation. That's why Q & A allocated time is so important and it's also an opportunity to invite others in the group to contribute to the answer, solution etc.

Take your second to find your flow again. I like to thank the heckler for the opportunity to get in a chug of water. Then I’ll crack and joke and go on with it. Depending on where the flow was cut, I may go back a bit to reiterate what I was saying. You can’t always defer from having a heckler, but you can use it to practice your speaking skills!

Before you start speaking you’ll need to make the decision on whether to take questions as they arise or at the end - to do this you’ll have to take factors such as audience size and topic complexity into consideration on which option to take. If faced with a heckler, remaining composed is paramount. As a speaker you’d assess the situation, addressing relevant questions briefly if necessary to maintain control. Otherwise, you would politely defer questions until the end to ensure a smooth flow for all attendees. Post-event reflection would serve to refine strategies for managing disruptions effectively in the future. Also try and understand why they’re heckling is it because they don’t understand the topic?

I love a heckler. They tell me that they are listening. It's important to remember that a heckler frightens the audience and so makes you look better instantly (Unless you are talking utter rubbish of course.) Never ignore them. Acknowledge their comments and use a coaching trick and use their exact words in your response as this tells them you were listening and accept their view. Do not try and change their view. It's theirs, not yours I love it when they heckle and try and sell to the audience. "Thanks Steve for sharing how your business helps people, however the organisers asked for my view, you can share yours online afterwards." I'm naturally a cheeky fun empowering speaker so this would work for me. Not all could get a way with that
