Historical re-enactors & simulators tend to be used for film & TV.In my experience, having worked with them on several occasions, they are incredibly knowledgeable & a mine of useful information that one can tap into.However, in the execution of fights, they tend to be rather gung-ho.This, in itself, is good for energy but terrible for safety.Improvisation isn’t an option.Each fight needs to be minutely choreographed to a level of spontaneity rather than relying on spontaneity itself.On stage, actors need a lot of training and choreography.It is very rare for re-enactors or simulators to be used.I’ve seen what can happen in an enthusiastic free for all & it’s not dramatic.Hence the need for qualified fight directors & stunt coordinators.

If a production intends to portray that event, then simulators make direction easier - “cast” already has their characters developed and rehearsed so the director only has to shape the storyline, make an interesting arc, and incorporate any non-sims into the ensemble. If the simulators are used to create mise en scene with seasoned ensemble to tell a different story, the STORY drives the production. In this case, the simulators must serve the story by modifying their character choices to match the characters or ensemble which the story calls for. This is a harder job of direction, because you’re countering instinctive character choices built through a simulation. If you can use it, great. If not, can they adapt?
