Some years ago, we faced the same issue in the company I worked at. We developed a standard model of virtualization for 6 sites based on blade technology and shared storage. That allowed us to maximize the use of our resources and at the same time having a standard model of operation, reduced complexity.

Most of the time you'll have access to the used markets. Newer equipment does not necessarily guarantee performance in ICT. In fact, most powerful computing systems are custom-made depending on the requirements. Virtualization is the future of computing.

The cloud nowadays is a relaible solution not only for large scale organizations, virtualization costs have become more sustainable and the financial burden of maintaining and replacing older hardware no longer hurts your budget directly, as many of the equipment and devices can be phased out at a less urgent pace while the virtualization takes care of everything major

IT culture tells me get the best system applicable and figure the later usage out. Management training tells me match resources and skillsets to what the situation needs at the time while planning for future development. Supply chain background tells me optimize based on the relevance to the supply chain and where strategic bottlenecks could exist. For this situation and my experience I would say the supply chain strategy is the most apt. A computer with XP doing inventory with very little lag time not linked to any other system may not need to upgrade. But as part of an ERP system where it could become a bottleneck to making it a decision support system cloud-based or otherwise, I would upgrade. No 2 companies or situations are the same.

My suggestions will include 1. Determine traffic priorities and volume, quantifying this will set the stage to determine required resources. 2. Understand current needs and determine future needs and contingencies. 3. New hardware is not always the solution as software upgrades or new systems can increase scalability and performance. 4. Match skill and competency required versus what is currently in place and conduct a gap analysis with a timeline to meet future goals. 5. Understand the type and complexity of data that you are managing and the infustructure required versus what is currently in place. 6. Craft an optimization chart and process to ensure you are getting the very best out of your network topology after implementation

Regularly analyze and right-size resources to match workloads, avoiding over-provisioning. Use tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, or Google Cloud's Recommender to gain insights into your resource usage and identify inefficiencies. Right-sizing involves adjusting instance types and sizes to better fit the actual performance needs of your applications. Implement auto-scaling groups to automatically adjust resources based on real-time demand. This ensures you're only paying for what you need, cutting unnecessary expenses and optimizing your budget.

Always run compute workloads as 'baloons' so as to allow allocation of resources as need be. Thin provisioning also allows proper usage of storage resources such that only required space is utilized.

2 Optimize Resources Effective resource optimization involves auditing your current infrastructure to identify underutilized assets. By reallocating or repurposing these resources, you can enhance system performance without additional spending. Techniques like load balancing can distribute workloads evenly across servers, preventing any single machine from becoming a bottleneck. This ensures that your systems can handle increased loads without the need for immediate hardware upgrades.

I believe the best way to deal with hardware constraints is to move on-premise servers to the cloud, where you can build servers into scale sets, which automatically increases and decreases the numbers of VMs needed based on demand, or lack of. Leave the hardware constraints for the cloud vendor.

One of the best ways to cut costs is to move to PAAS or SAAS solutions where applicable rather than IAAS . You should as much as possible switch to consumption based model so that you get billed on what you actually spend

Cloud Solutions Leverage pay-as-you-go cloud services from providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud to scale without significant upfront costs. Cloud platforms offer scalable resources that can be adjusted based on demand, providing a cost-effective solution for growing businesses. Utilize reserved instances or savings plans for predictable workloads to save on long-term costs. Take advantage of cloud-native tools and services, such as serverless computing and managed databases, to reduce the operational burden and focus on innovation. Cloud solutions also offer built-in redundancy and disaster recovery options.

Through Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS), offers significant advantages 1)Scalability: Cloud services provide the ability to scale resources up or down based on demand. This flexibility allows businesses to handle varying workloads efficiently without over-provisioning or under-provisioning resources. 2)Cost-effectiveness: With pay-as-you-go pricing models, businesses pay only for the resources they use. This eliminates the need for large upfront investments in hardware and reduces costs. 3)Flexibility: IaaS and PaaS platforms offer a wide range of services and tools that can be easily integrated into applications.

Even when virtualization worked in my previous experiences, today I would probably go straight to the Cloud. You can forget about hardware management (from keeping firmware updated to replacing fualty parts) and focus on operations. A combination of IaaS or SaaS solutions can bring great benefits like reduce operational costs, reduce single points of failure and faster response time to changes in business requirements.

Automation Benefits Use automation tools to streamline processes, ensuring rapid, reliable, and efficient scaling. Implementing CI/CD pipelines with tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI can automate testing, building, and deployment, reducing manual intervention and speeding up release cycles. Use configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef to automate infrastructure provisioning and management. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform and AWS CloudFormation enable you to define and manage infrastructure through code, ensuring consistency and scalability across environments.

I remember some years ago when we decided to upgrade our old storage system and replace it with a new state-of-the-art model, with tiered storage (HDD and SDD). Even when we kept our old blade servers (no need to upgrade them, they were working perfectly and their processing power was more than enough for our needs) we've been struggling with storage capacity and IOPS performance. This upgrade allowed us to manage a big migration and keep the databases running with even better response times than before. So yes: upgrade smart.
