You’re leading an automotive engineering team. What leadership qualities do you need to succeed?

Eu diria que a questão da competência técnica é um pré-requisito pra a liderança em equipes multifuncionais na engenharia automotiva. Mas gostaria de reforçar que focar apenas essa competência torna-se um risco para o time como um todo. É necessária, assim como em qualquer outra área de atuação, o desenvolvimento de soft skills que o alicerce para o sucesso na condição de líder: boa comunicação, abertura para fornecer e receber feedback, pensamento estratégico em relação a área, pensamento crítico e, não menos importante, conhecimento do negócio.

For a leader in engineering team, some of the key qualities are listed below: 1. Being technically sound- it helps team to have the right direction and qualitative solution.. 2. Being Visionary- it will lead the journey from concept to final solution of the problem. 3. Being Creative- it will help in the multitude of solution for a single problem. 4. Allowing independence to the team- it helps the team to grow to its full potential. 5. Communication excellence- this is a much needed but rarely found characteristics of an engineering leader. 6. Motivator and story teller- not every effort converts into the required solution. Hence, team needs constant push.

A leader should possess certain leadership qualities for leading his/her team on a right track.. an Automotive Engineering Team should have such a leader who can motivate his/her teammates for generating innovative ideas , focusing on Ideas workshop ..Let his teammates get involved in value analysis and value engineering project work , prioritising on Core Research and Development activities, Emphasising on new technologies as per current market trends, focusing on sustainability and reliability of products, adding values on internal and external stakeholders’ perspective and so on.. Leader should motivate his teammates on utilising AI-Gen in Automotive provision,electrification, following principle & maintained well connectivity.

Technical competence is a foundation for leadership. It will provide a holistic view of a product growth strategy. It helps to foresee the challenges and mitigate the risks.

Ser líder é entre outros exercer uma função social, o papel de formador / mentor de profissionais, nesse sentido ter conhecimento técnico sobre a área que atua é fundamental. Como liderar/guiar sem conhecer e/ou dominar o assunto?!

Para qualquer tipo de liderança a comunicação é uma habilidade fundamental e não seria diferente na engenharia automotiva. Mas trago uma reflexão sobre pontos a serem considerados em uma comunicação, como: não só o caminho de “ida da informação” (a forma como me expresso), mas principalmente o caminho “de volta”, ou seja, ouvir e assim entender não só as necessidades da sua equipe, mas também suas ideias, ouvir para aprender e assim estar pronto para a melhoria e mudanças, na busca por resultados. Outro ponto sensível à comunicação, é o que resumo por “combinado não sai caro”, em outras palavras, ter claro seu objetivo em qualquer tipo de comunicação e assim alinhar objetivamente as expectativas, entregas e prazos, de forma coerente.

being good at talking and listening is super important. You need to explain things clearly, listen to what your team says, and give helpful feedback. This helps everyone work well together, understand their jobs, and share ideas. Good communication also solves problems, keeps everyone happy and motivated, and makes the team stronger. Being open to hearing what others think and getting better at talking to them makes everything run smoother and helps the team do great teamwork

Being a leader of a car engineering team means you should be good at solving problems. This includes figuring out what's wrong and finding clever and smart ways to fix it. You need to think carefully, be open to new ideas, and work together with your team to come up with solutions. Como líder de engenharia automotiva, trabalhar com riscos e oportunidades, e efetivamente saber lidar e ter / conhecer as ferramentas necessárias para resolução de problemas de forma rápida e eficaz e fundamental, uma vez que não tratamos apenas da responsabilidade por um projeto ou uma responsabilidade financeira, aqui existe uma responsabilidade junto à vida, social e de meio ambiente.

When you should solve the problems it means you failed as a team manager. Your team should be able to identify and solve the problems individually. The members should have the skills. You need the skills to decide between different solutions and give directions. As a leader you don't have time to dig into testing results, so your teams should be able to do that.

Being a team leader of a car engineering team means you should be good at working together with others since it's a teamwork. This includes listening to everyone's ideas, giving helpful feedback, and making sure everyone feels like they're part of the team. You also need to be able to divide tasks fairly, use each person's strengths, and encourage everyone to help each other out. Being kind, trustworthy, and ready to lend a hand when needed makes the team stronger and helps get things done well.

visionary skills means you should be good at planning for the future. This includes setting clear goals and inspiring your team to work together toward those goals. You need to understand what customers want, keep up with new technology, and find ways to make things better. Sharing your vision with the team and making sure everyone knows what to do is important. Being ready to change plans as needed is also crucial because the car industry is always changing and innovating

They are all important, some more than others depending on the team, the project need and overall skills. Clear vision, communication, team assignments all help with a clear known vision. Buy in by team members is assumed by management, but not all teams members will just do the job needed. It requires vision and leadership to get to the blocking points, figure out when and how/who will handle them....one or team or a subset This is why I'd pick this as primary, but honestly, depending on the team and the experience it could be many of them. Having spent most of my time in R&D this is most important...
