You’re a Machine Learning professional with too much on your plate. How can you stay on top of it all?

The term “task” in machine learning projects refers to the smallest unit of work subject to management accountability that needs to be completed in a machine learning project. There ecists several task prioritization methods namely Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Pairwise Comparison, Cost-Value Prioritization, Cumulative Voting and so on. We need to make a judicious choice. evaluate the dependencies and interdependencies among tasks. We need to identify tasks that are dependent on the completion of other tasks or those that may impact the progress of other tasks. We also require to prioritize tasks that have dependencies, as they may have a cascading effect on other tasks if delayed.

Divide your day according to your key tasks. While working on anything ML, I am really cautious of when do I want to process the problem statement in my head and work out different approaches. Usually early in the day since I am more in a mix of creative + analytical zone. This means towards the later part of the day, I can just spend time focusing on testing everything

Feeling swamped as a Machine Learning pro? Simplify by sorting your tasks. Picture your duties in four boxes: 1) Must-do-now (urgent and important), 2) Later tasks (important, not urgent), 3) Delegate jobs (urgent, not so important), and 4) Drop the rest (neither urgent nor important). Start with the must-dos and plan the later tasks next. Pass on the urgent but less crucial tasks to others, and feel free to drop what doesn't really matter. This way, you'll focus on what truly counts, keeping stress at bay and productivity high!

To manage a heavy workload in Machine Learning: 1. Prioritize tasks based on impact. 2. Break projects into smaller, manageable tasks. 3. Use project management tools like Trello or Asana. 4. Set realistic deadlines and stick to them. 5. Delegate tasks when possible. 6. Take regular breaks to avoid burnout. 7. Stay organized with documentation and version control. 8. Continuously refine processes for efficiency.

For repetitive tasks such as data cleaning and preprocessing, it would be inefficient to manually write code for every dataset, especially if the data source is the same. In such cases, a robust approach is to build a pipeline that completes a fixed number of steps to prepare the data for modelling and analysis. This could include: 1. Validating column data types and checking for incorrect formats (eg. 19 v/s "nineteen" as a word). 2. Checking for outliers (eg. a negative value in a column for population count). 3. Performing a calculation with some columns to create a calculated variable. (eg. Ranking students based on their test scores). 4. Converting data types if needed (eg. Converting audio into spectrograms).

Actually, I disagree with the notion that cloud platforms are the only way to automate and streamline machine learning workflows. In practice, many organizations benefit from a hybrid approach that combines cloud services with on-premises solutions. This strategy leverages the control and security of local resources, while still taking advantage of the scalability of cloud resources for tasks like training large models or processing big data. Such a hybrid model can provide a more flexible and cost-effective solution, allowing teams to work within their organizational policies and regulatory requirements, without fully depending on cloud providers.

In our experience, it is best to approach ML process tasks based on the experience and capabilities of the team. Simple command: - transforms for training models (not just simple torch) - ClearML/wandb for tracking experiments - Dagster/Airflow for data pipelines - serving models, for example, on Triton Inference Server Big team: - self-written models in pytorch, but training is carried out on transformers/deepspeed, since good support for distributed learning is definitely needed here - self-written model and data showcases - complex data preprocessing pipelines (Spark Scala, Hadoop, Airflow) - your own inference frameworks (possibly for your own hardware)

These iterative steps are ideal for automation.AutoML leverages existing ML algorithms to facilitate the creation of novel machine learning model. There are several efficient framework for ML automation such as TensorFlow Extended (TFX) from Google, AWS Sagemaker from AWS, MLflow ( opensource platform) and others.

Leveraging existing machine learning solutions and insights can accelerate problem-solving and innovation. Platforms such as Kaggle, Medium, and Coursera offer a treasure trove of knowledge and practical examples. Engaging with online communities like Stack Overflow and LinkedIn facilitates collaboration and continuous learning in the field of machine learning.

But the most important thing is to start putting the information received into practice. Honestly I’m at the point now where I’m literally stuffing industry changes like research papers, model parameters, frameworks, model descriptions into my own personal RAG model to help me stay on top of learning new things and overcoming gaps in my knowledge. This industry is moving so fast and why shouldn’t we use AI and ML to help stay on top of it?

The balance between work and other things is a philosophical question. Everything very much depends on the individual components. As a last resort, you even need to work this out with specialists, examine yourself and understand which mode will be best. The main thing is to value yourself and those around you, strive for changes, and don’t forget to sleep!

If you consistently have too much on your plate this is likely a symptom of committing to too many things or poor management. This should be dealt with in a conversation between you and your manager to help prioritise and drop your current workload to a manageable level. Be explicit about what support you need from them whether that's helping with prioritisation, not committing to additional work, or pushing back to stakeholders.

Additionally, leverage project management tools to organize tasks, set deadlines, and track progress. Break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable chunks to maintain focus and momentum. Regularly review and adjust priorities based on changing requirements or deadlines. Delegate tasks when possible to lighten your workload and foster collaboration. Take breaks and practice self-care to prevent burnout and maintain productivity. Finally, communicate openly with stakeholders about workload and timelines to manage expectations effectively.

Two important aspect that generally overlook as professionals in any field which are relevant for us ML professionals as well are - Feedback Loop and Delegation. Delegate Tasks: Delegate non-critical tasks or tasks outside your expertise to team members or external resources, allowing you to focus on high-impact activities that leverage your skills and knowledge. Feedback Mechanism: -Implement a feedback mechanism to gather input from users, stakeholders, participants and team members. -Encourage users to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the training materials, sessions, and workshops.

If you are working in a company then this could be the sign of poor planning, not being able to manage expectations etc… Imo this isn’t an ML-related problem
