A brighter spotlight has been shining on cybersecurity recently, especially driven by the acquisition rumors between Google and Wiz as well as by the global IT outage created by CrowdStrike’s update. In a chat with Jacob Robbins from PitchBook, .406 Partner Greg Dracon shared his perspective coming from 20 years of investing in cybersecurity companies. The 18th Annual CDOIQ Program Symposium reunited hundreds of data leaders (whose roles are becoming increasingly critical as their enterprises wrestle with the adoption of AI) along with many leading companies including Reltio and Promethium. It was great to see those two companies (both .406 Ventures portfolio companies) present to packed audiences on the importance of Master Data Management (#MDM) and #DataFabric in enabling #DataProducts.    Along with the rich conversation and speaker sessions, I participated in a panel alongside Moran Cabili-Kalmar and Maria C Villar about the important role of startups and in particular deep-tech startups in solving the data and AI challenges facing #CDOs today. Many startups, especially those founded out of academia, are addressing critical issues in the data and AI stacks, and it was great to hear both the academic and the CDO perspective on the importance of working closely with entrepreneurs to solve enterprise needs.    The transformative power of #GenerativeAI continues to be a central talking point, but the hype of last year has given way to a more cautious optimism among CDOs. The discussion has shifted towards how effective data management strategies are critical for Generative AI readiness and therefore more CDOs will focus on data completeness, flexibility, connectedness, quality, and governance as critical to building trustworthy AI.  In particular, the infusion of human knowledge into our data products featured heavily in this year’s discourse. Many of the popular topics aligned perfectly with our active investment theses, including: the growing need for a semantic layer to bridge business concepts and raw data; the use of graph technology to incorporate human knowledge and subject matter expertise; and the ability of both to foster more accurate, interpretable, and grounded Generative AI use. I was also glad to see that CDOs are staying vigilant about both data gravity and provenance, as Generative AI’s dependence on good, clean, and trusted data will only increase with adoption and integration. It’s a critical but exciting time to be a data leader. Great to be back at CDOIQ, and excited to see what progress is made before next year’s symposium!   Kevin C.
