This week I had the incredible opportunity to interview Michael Patrick Gibson, co-founder of the 1517 Fund!🚀 Discussing the intricacies of starting your own venture capital, the common pitfalls for young entrepreneurs, and the importance of diving in before feeling fully ready, I gained invaluable insights from one of the leading minds in entrepreneurship and tech investment. Michael's emphasis on starting early and embracing the learning curve offers a powerful message for those of us passionate about building and innovating. We explored key traits that drive entrepreneurial success and how to navigate the inevitable challenges and failures that come with the territory. What made this interview particularly compelling was not just Michael's profound knowledge and experience but also his authenticity and inspiring approach to mentoring the next generation of disruptors. The chance to meet and interact with many young, incredible individuals who are already making significant strides in their fields further enriched this experience. As someone deeply invested in entrepreneurship, technology, and the art of building, this conversation was not just educational but also profoundly motivating. Michael Gibson is truly an amazing person whose vision for a proactive, fearless approach in entrepreneurship will undoubtedly influence many. I also want to express a huge thank you to Kevin Martelli for involving me in the organization of this event. His efforts made this enriching experience possible. A heartfelt thank you to Michael for his time and wisdom and to all the inspiring young individuals I met in Milan. Let’s keep building and innovating!🚀 #Entrepreneurship #VentureCapital #Innovation #TechStartups #1517Fund #PaperBeltOnFire #BuildingTheFuture

We're launching a new program today for post docs and PhDs who want to take a summer to explore revolutionary science instead of adding decimal points to their advisor's views:

Good visual below of a big problem in academic science: it's taking people too long to get to the frontier in their field. Economist Benjamin Jones documents the shifting age distribution of genius over 100 years. How to turn the tide and return to cowboy science? The truth is good science might be conducted in a university lab. But great science often arrives from somewhere else. Newton discovering calculus and gravity at his childhood home, Darwin formulating his theory of evolution on the H.M.S. Beagle, Einstein working as a patent clerk while investigating relativity, Shockley’s invention of the modern transistor in a Chicago hotel room: many of the best scientists have achieved breakthroughs when on break from their day-to-day commitments or away from a university. To be sure, universities facilitate important discoveries. But sadly our grant-making institutions and labs do not trust younger, bolder scientists to do great work. Many researchers must sacrifice their 20s and 30s adding decimal points to conventional views held by dogmatic advisors or political hiring committees.  There is also the brute fact of the game of academic musical chairs: too many incredible young researchers competing against each other for too few tenure-track positions. We make fewer discoveries, and build fewer engineering marvels because too many great minds play it safe or compete in a losing game. Incrementalism has prevailed for too long. This is why today we are launching our new program for researchers who want to experiment with their ideas outside of academic institutions. We’re calling it the Flux Capacitor (“the Flux” for short). Unlike Doc from the movie Back to the Future, we can’t build a time machine to change the past. But we can use funds to give scientists their time back to pursue the unconventional and turn science fiction to fact.
