With complex solutions, it's important to leverage efficiencies even when creating product differentiation. This research from Defined Contribution Institutional Investment Association (DCIIA) contains many valuable insights into recordkeeper perspectives--even though retirement income is becoming a higher priority, they still need to juggle many interests (SECURE 2.0, anyone?). If auto features aren't the magic wand 🧙♀️ to improve retirement security, what next? One of the authors of the study that Emile Hallez covered for InvestmentNews has one answer: link auto-escalation to age, not tenure at a given company. James J. Choi offered this great solution, but there are others--and some are recognized and being haltingly addressed. The study points out that one weakness of auto features is what happens to participants who opt out. But auto-reenrollment (including contribution escalation) is a great way to deal with that--this is something Shlomo Benartzi, who is famously at the forefront of 401(k) nudges, has been leaning into. In some cases, a participant may stop 🛑 contributing or increasing contributions out of necessity. However, they don't think to start back up again even when they're able to. A mechanism that would start them back on the path of saving would help those individuals. 💡 Most importantly, we need to do a better job of providing a retirement system that allows people to have a diverse work history and a consistent retirement saving experience. Alex Ortolani's piece for PLANSPONSOR touches on the challenges of benchmarking products, which potentially gets more challenging with continued innovation. Given that most of the lifetime income solutions in the 401(k) space are quite different from each other, we can understand that plan fiduciaries find it tough to keep their arms wrapped around the landscape of offerings. ⚡ This is why we start with process, not product, to help identify those that might be a good fit for a given plan. Have the big burning 🔥 questions about in-plan income changed much? 🧐 Intriguing insights from J.P. Morgan Asset Management on plan sponsor paternalism vs. participant expectations. Plan sponsor research from 2023 found that 80% of sponsors expressed a "strong sense of responsibility" to help participants generate income for retirement. This year's participant survey found that only 6 out of 10 participants felt the same. ⚡ That sponsors feel more strongly about it than participants is surprising given the overall sluggishness of the lifetime income market to grow; the sense of responsibility isn't strong enough to ignite this space, but it may help it grow once it's more mature. Another interesting note is that the participant results varied by generation, with Boomers feeling the least strongly about this (49%) and Gen Z feeling the strongest (72%). The good news is that the expansion of in-plan lifetime income benefits will evolve along with participant demand.
