We need a nuclear resurgence - can small modular reactors lead the way? The revival of the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan is a clear signal that our government is (correctly) reevaluating nuclear energy’s role in the path to a clean energy future. With nearly $2 billion in support from federal and state governments, this restart is signaling newfound recognition...how can we meet our climate goals without nuclear power? As we push toward carbon neutrality, the demand for consistent, reliable, and low-carbon energy is going to continue to skyrocket - AI server farms and data centers will consume a growing % of US electricity in the coming years. Wind and solar are crucial, but they can’t solve the problem. Nuclear energy offers a dependable solution to complement these renewables and potentially take over the whole market. Restarting old plants is a great sign that leaders are moving in the right direction, but we need innovation to bring nuclear fully into the 21st century. This is where small modular reactors come in. SMRs promise to be safer, more flexible, and quicker to deploy than traditional reactors, making them the key to our energy strategy. The government’s role here is crucial. The NRC and other agencies must work hand-in-hand with companies to ensure that these advanced reactors can come online quickly and safely. As we look forward, it’s clear that nuclear isn’t just part of our past - it’s an essential part of our future. We're excited to back visionary founders in the nuclear space like the team at Aalo Atomics to bring everything I stated above to life. Enough with the red tape...let's open the doors to a clean future! ...and while I love the look of a classic nuclear plant, let's maybe go with some better color schemes this time around...

Aalo has a new HQ in Austin Texas! Last week we moved into our new 40,000 square foot facility, where we plan to build our pilot reactor factory line. Our “product” isn’t just the Aalo-1 reactor, but is also the factory itself, which we're designing to produce dozens of reactors per year. Stay tuned for more updates on what we’re up to in this new space! https://lnkd.in/gC4WV4iT cc Aalo Atomics

Very excited to announce that Aalo has closed a $27M Series A! We’re honored to be partnering with an incredible group of investors going into this next chapter. The future of nuclear is bright, and Aalo is just getting started. We’re on a mission to make small nuclear reactors in large factories. This will enable predictable low costs and short construction timelines, making clean energy a reality, any place, any time. Here’s what resonated most with our backers: ➡️ Speed: We raised our $6M Seed just about a year ago, and in the past 9 months we've scaled the team to 15 ppl, finished conceptual design of our reactor, signed a Siting MOU with the DOE, and submitted our REP to the NRC with agreement from a first customer. ➡️ Technology: Compelling economics thanks to high fuel energy density, simplified reactor inherent safety, and a focus on factory manufacturability from day 1. There exists an optimal balance between economy of numbers and economy of scale in nuclear, and we intend to find it. ➡️ Team: Highly experienced and credible team. Many worked on MARVEL program, and delivered first DOE authorization for construction of a new reactor since the DOE was formed in 1977. VP of Regulatory Affairs who helped pioneer the modern RIPB licensing framework used by most advanced nuclear companies today. (And more). ➡️ Master Plan: Unique strategy around go-to-market, regulatory approval, and technical de-risking. More to be announced here soon! Interested in joining the team, partnering, or visiting us in Austin or Idaho Falls? Please do reach out! 👋 And once again, thanks to Fifty Years, Valor Equity Partners, Harpoon Ventures, Crosscut Ventures, SNR, Alumni Ventures, Preston-Werner Ventures, Earth Venture Capital, Garage Capital, Wayfinder Ventures, Jeff Dean, Nucleation Capital, AME Cloud Ventures, Tyler Knight, Wheeler Gibson, Matthew Bellamy, Abhay Venkatesh, Guthrie Gintzler, Matt Sweeney, Calvin French-Owen, and some that we can't speak of publicly. This week Aalo visited a 1 GW natural gas plant! The difference between this and an equivalent nuclear plant was stark. Here’s what stood out to us: ➡️ Natural gas plants are staffed by only a handful of people (typically < 20 at a given time). In an equivalent nuclear plant, there would be ~500 people on site. ➡️ The security at natural gas plants includes keycard access and security cameras. The equivalent nuclear plants have sniper rifle towers and ~100 armed guards. ➡️ Operational costs can range between 1.5-4.5 cents / kWh. It’s incredible how low this is considering the huge amount of natural gas that must constantly be mined, refined, and transported to the site. This speaks to the maturity of the infrastructure built out for natural gas over the past 100 years. ➡️ Turbines typically require maintenance every 30k-50k hours, or 3-6 years. We went inside the turbine room and it was like being inside the belly of a dragon. Incredible engineering to get the turbine to last that long without maintenance under those conditions (more extreme than what a steam turbine is subjected to at a nuclear plant). ➡️ Natural gas plant owners do sometimes perform remote centralized operations for a fleet of turbines. Good inspiration for a micro-reactor company. ➡️ When most US natural gas plants were built, coal was the largest source of electricity in the US. But natural gas surpassed coal as the largest energy producer in the country in 2016. Very impressive to see the growth that natural gas has had in the past 30 years. Time will tell what this looks like for nuclear over the next 30! Thanks to Wheeler Gibson for setting this up for the team Aalo Atomics.

Aalo is officially on the NRC website! We recently submitted the Regulatory Engagement Plan for our first commercial project to the US nuclear regulator: The NRC. What does this mean? The REP is a document that outlines how we intend to license the first commercial installment of the Aalo-1. This will be a 7x Aalo-1 reactor fleet, totaling 70 MWe to power our first customer located in Idaho (more to be announced soon). Note that the timelines described here are targets.
