Supporting active citizens, responsible leaders and accountable institutions around the world.

About us

Our vision is a world in which people with power are accountable. It is a world in which resources are used wisely, decisions benefit everyone fairly, and people lead secure lives. We are catalyzing a new generation of active citizens and responsible leaders around the world by supporting change-makers to develop and implement positive ideas for integrity in their communities. By enabling people to generate the knowledge, skills and networks needed for accountability, we unleash positive social and economic change. We have three mutually-reinforcing objectives: to support a positive movement to build accountability; provide substantive, flexible and long-term support for those leaders who can collectively lead this movement within specific contexts; and support collaboration around accountability and open governance.

🌍 In this week's global roundup! 🇳🇬 Accountability Lab Nigeria held a 2-day sensitization workshop for community frontline advocates in oil-producing communities to advocate for the benefits of the Host Community Development Trust Fund that communities are entitled to. According to the Petroleum Industry Act in the country, companies are responsible for contributing 3% of their operating expenditure to the Fund. 🇳🇵Accountability Lab Nepal brought a number of civil society organizations together to conduct a comprehensive study on Youth Political Participation in the country. The working group's approach will include policy analysis, evaluating existing initiatives, engaging stakeholders to create solution-oriented strategies, and monitoring the implementation of proposed solutions. 🇿🇼 Accountability Lab Zimbabwe hosted a vibrant online discussion on accountability of public funds in the country following the launch of the Auditor General's report. Guests and listeners shared their concerns around the most critical accountability issues in the report, but also some solutions such as capacitating public service officials where there are gaps in knowledge.

📣 Exciting news! Accountability Lab Nepal has partnered with the ERCAS - European Research Centre for Anti-Corruption and State-Building for the 2024 update of the Transparency Index (T-Index). Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4cIIdXn. The T-Index is a vital tool that evaluates both the legal and operational transparency of governments through its de jure and de facto components. It highlights gaps in transparency policy implementation and enables cross-country comparisons. This comprehensive view helps define best practices and create roadmaps for effective transparency policies. The T-Index relies on contributions from public agencies, civil society organizations, and individuals. Their feedback, received through a crowdsourcing process, helps monitor the state of public transparency in the 143 countries evaluated by the tool. Following the 2023 global report publication (https://bit.ly/4cGp1cE), which involved over 60 public and private institutions, an updated version of the T-Index will be released in the second half of this year. Narayan Adhikari, Accountability Lab Nepal Country Director, will steer the process in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, connecting and engaging with contributors from all over the region. 📣 Contributions are needed to make this year's T-Index a success! ➡️ Public agencies, civil society organizations, and individuals are all invited to provide feedback through the online form here: https://bit.ly/3Sdawor or by contacting [email protected]. ➡️ To facilitate contributions, a questionnaire is available at the end of the T-Index methodology page for feedback submission. Contributions will be received during July and August 2024 and will be acknowledged here: https://bit.ly/46b63ID

🌟 Exciting Announcement! 🌟 🇺🇸 I am thrilled to announce that I have recently joined the Global Board of the Accountability Lab, a translocal network (14 countries), dedicated to making governance work for people by supporting young change-makers. For over a decade, I have been helping build the African tech ecosystem by supporting start-ups in their growth and by building the tech skills of young people. Throughout this journey, I have witnessed the critical role that effective governance plays in shaping the trajectories of young people and entrepreneurs. The Accountability Lab empowers people to use information and knowledge to hold those in power accountable, fostering positive social and economic change. Joining the global board of this organization feels like a natural extension of my mission. Thank you to the Accountability Lab’s global board members for this opportunity. I look forward to working with you and contributing, in my capacity, to a more accountable world. The first step of this new adventure was participating in the global board meeting held in Washington D.C. a few weeks ago. I was deeply impressed by the amazing work the teams are doing and their effective impact in their communities. Looking forward to what comes next! ****** 🇫🇷🌟 Annonce excitante ! AL's regional office for South & East Africa and Accountability Lab South Africa joined young people from over 20 countries for the Democracy Moves annual conference in Nairobi. The coalition brings youth organizations together as movement towards more just and participatory democracies. This year's conference explored innovation in evolving civic and governance space and young people's place in that evolution. AL's Funeka Manzi and Makomborero Carl Muropa with Restless Development discussed how effective CSOs' advocacy has been in promoting youth political participation in Africa, especially in this bumper election year. The discussion emphasized the critical need for CSOs to engage youth throughout the election cycle, and not only as voters but as political office holders.
