For our August Volunteer Spotlight, we’re highlighting Michael Hu, Legislative Ambassador for ACS CAN Pennsylvania! Michael was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in March 2022, which was a devasting moment for him and his family. Thankfully, his doctor ordered biomarker testing to determine if certain targeted treatments would be beneficial. Based on his results, his doctor prescribed medication that was so effective, Michael began to feel relief from his symptoms within days. “Any additional challenges, no matter how small, can be insurmountable when you’re already dealing with a devastating diagnosis. It’s a real problem, with real people and real impact.” Recently, Pennsylvania passed legislation that removes barriers to biomarker testing. Michael, and many patient advocates across the state, were crucial in this win. Michael shared his story and the financial challenges he faced getting access to his biomarker testing at the ACS CAN Pennsylvania Cancer Action Day press conference. “One of the reasons I got involved [with ACS CAN] was [because] cancer took away a lot from me, and being able to do something that helps others made me feel empowered again. If you want to make a difference for people struggling with cancer, ACS CAN is a great way to give back.” Watch Michael’s biomarker story: https://lnkd.in/eM4eWmWr #CancerAdvocacy #BiomarkerTesting #Biomarkers #LungCancer #CancerStories
