🧠 Did you know the strength of your immune system is highly impacted by whether you’re born male or female? Females’ immune systems tend to be stronger, but what does that mean for cancer care? Elise Alspach, PhD, is an American Cancer Society grant recipient and researcher at Saint Louis University School of Medicine studying the differences in how male and female immune systems respond to cancer. “Our immune systems can identify cancer and work to kill tumor cells. This is the basis for how immunotherapies treat cancer. Even though we know male and female immune systems are different, we understand very little about how that impacts our immune response against cancer. With this new understanding, we hope to help doctors make better decisions about the treatments that are most likely to succeed for individual patients.”

The Collaboration for Equitable Health (CFEH) recently attended the Urban Expo Back to School & Community Empowerment Festival in St. Louis. The festival is a collaboration with the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (ULSTL) and St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) and provides a way to share critical information and services to the local community. Our CFEH Health Equity Ambassadors from Chi Eta Phi and the Urban League shared breast, prostate, and colon cancer risk reduction and VOICES information with more than 5,000 people. The Collaboration for Equitable Health, powered by Bank of America, brings together the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, and the University of Michigan School of Public Health, to work to address the leading causes of death in communities of color.
