To celebrate Disability Pride Month, ADAPT is highlighting different disability rights activists you should know. Today, we are recognizing Alice Wong, a Chinese American writer and activist who is most well-known for founding the Disability Visibility Project. Alice Wong was born in 1974 with spinal muscular atrophy, a disorder that caused her muscles to weaken and took away her ability to walk. Since her days in graduate school, where she chaired the Disability Interest Group, Wong has been a champion of disability rights. In 2013, Wong was selected by President Barack Obama to serve on the National Council on Disability, which advised U.S. legislators on matters affecting Americans with Disabilities. Then, in 2014, she founded the Disability Visibility Project, which aims to tell the authentic stories of people with disabilities through oral histories. Follow us at @adaptwechange on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn as we post more iconic disability rights activists during Disability Pride Month!

Last month, members of ADAPT’s Pelham Day Hab in the Bronx went out to Pelham park for a scavenger hunt. With the help of art specialist Natalie Reichel, Pelham Day Hab goers travelled in a group around the park looking for rocks that were painted with an undisclosed theme that turned out to be Beauty in the Beast. After the scavenger hunt, everybody had the chance to paint their own rock to bring home with them as a souvenir. Maria, one of the participants, said, "I didn't find anything during the hunt but painting my own rock made the whole thing worth it!" Many thanks to Natalie and Pelham staff for arranging this wonderful outing!
