The State University of New York notes that stackable microcredentials can pave the way to a certificate or full degree. This trend is particularly beneficial for job seekers and employees alike. The Harris Poll, commissioned by Express Employment Professionals, reveals that 77% of U.S. hiring managers consider microcredentials as valuable as or even more valuable than traditional degrees. Additionally, 81% believe microcredentials contribute to a timely supply of skilled workers. Job seekers echo these sentiments, with 86% viewing microcredentials as a valuable means for established employees to enhance their skill sets and knowledge, while 79% believe they can help alleviate the workforce shortage. As the popularity of microcredentials continues to rise, individuals considering enrollment should evaluate the program's alignment with local job market needs. Essential considerations include the program's design with industry input, flexibility in timing and location, stackability for future degree requirements, institutional credibility, and the effectiveness of credential verification methods.     The construction industry is facing a significant workforce challenge as it aims to attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers in 2023 to meet the growing demand, according to a model developed by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). With over 390,000 job openings per month in 2022, the industry unemployment rate was the second-lowest on record. However, the impending retirement of nearly 1 in 4 construction workers older than 55 poses a serious threat. Many of these skilled workers are also the most productive, emphasizing the urgency to address not only a labor shortage but also a skills gap. ABC President and CEO, Michael Bellaman, highlights the vital role skilled construction professionals play in America's economic and infrastructure initiatives. The shortage persists despite increased interest rates and a moderation in single-family home building. The challenge is two-fold, with robust demand from mega-projects and insufficient younger workers entering skilled trades. Skilled worker numbers, especially in certain occupations like carpentry, have declined, creating an urgent need for recruitment, education, and upskilling efforts. Adozi is committed to bridging this gap, working with our industry partners to train and upskill workers with next generation training. In the UK, the manufacturing sector alone contributes to 16% of reported employee injuries, underscoring the importance of robust health and safety training. Neglecting proper workplace safety can lead to severe consequences, from increased health risks for employees to fines and legal repercussions for the company. Rushing to fill the skills gap without prioritizing comprehensive training can create a more damaging gap, jeopardizing the workforce and the business. Recent legal cases highlight the potential dangers, such as a manufacturing company facing prosecution due to inadequate training that resulted in a serious injury to a young apprentice. To protect the growing workforce effectively, employers must adopt employee-centered training approaches. Recognizing the ongoing need for skills refreshment in the manufacturing sector, providing comprehensive training tailored to employees' preferred learning styles and schedules becomes paramount. Offering multiple training delivery forms, including in-company sessions and flexible, self-paced courses, ensures accessibility and relevance. Moreover, fostering a culture of continued learning is essential. With a generous $750,000 grant, Coconino County Community College (CCC) is set to enhance its skilled training programs in construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and more. The grant will facilitate facility remodeling, creating additional lab space, upgrading equipment, and hiring more instructors to meet the rising demand for skilled tradespeople. Lowe's Foundation recognizes the nationwide need for skilled tradespeople, estimating a requirement for 546,000 new professionals in 2023 alone. CCC's involvement in Lowe's Gable Grants program, a five-year, $50 million initiative, aligns with the mission to prepare 50,000 individuals for successful careers in skilled trades. The Lowe’s Foundation Board of Directors, witnessing firsthand how the grant will benefit Coconino County Community College and the local community, emphasizes the urgency of training the next generation to prevent a decline in skilled trades workers.     A recent Richmond Times-Dispatch article highlights the construction industry's pressing issue: a severe shortage of skilled workers. Companies like Tolley Electrical Corp. in Hanover County are tackling this challenge by employing apprenticeship programs that blend hands-on experience with classroom learning. Camden Ramsey, a 21-year-old electrician apprentice, serves as a prime example of this approach's success. He's in his third year of a four-year apprenticeship, with the initial two years focused on classroom education and the latter two on practical training. This comprehensive method requires dedication from both apprentices and their mentors. Hands-on learning plays a crucial role in these programs. Ramsey, under the guidance of Pat Norris, learns by doing. When faced with new tasks, Norris provides step-by-step guidance. This combination of practical training and mentorship ensures that apprentices continue to learn throughout their careers. The labor shortage isn't just a problem for contractors; it impacts the entire construction process. Aging skilled workers nearing retirement are hard to replace. Contractors must now consider their existing workforce and the specialized subcontractors required for projects. Beyond labor shortages, the industry also faces unpredictable issues, like finding qualified truck drivers and supply chain disruptions. These challenges increase costs and sometimes lead to project delays or cancellations. In many cases, the clean energy transition depends on these dedicated professionals. Further, those responsible for our national security are scouring the country for skilled labor. While tech giants like Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, are laying off skilled developers, defense giants like Electric Boat Co. are ramping up the training and production from trade like welders. As energy services experience double-digit growth and with a huge boost from the Inflation Reduction Act, the demand for HVAC labor has never been greater! However, labor shortages are heating up the challenge for the industry. Managing growth and quality is proving to be a challenge. Installers are exhausted after routinely working after working double shifts, and as production goals ramp up, expensive rework is becoming a frequent occurrence. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the labor shortage will only get worse, as demand for HVAC soars, but trained installers continue to lag. The Solution? Their analysis reveals a concerning statistic: even if all unemployed individuals with experience in durable goods manufacturing were employed, the industry would only fill about 75% of the vacant jobs. This shortage emphasizes the critical need for strategic interventions to bolster the workforce in these crucial sectors.
