We’ve all heard it. In times of stress, it seems that everyone’s advice is to take a deep breath and try to relax. But does breathing really help and what’s the best way to make your breath work for you? Research conducted by author and Yale Professor Emma Seppälä, PhD, with colleagues at Yale University, and numerous other studies, show that breathing exercises are one of the most effective and fastest ways to handle emotions in real-time. Using your breath can get you from a heightened emotional state (let’s say a 10 on a 1-10 scale) to a more relaxed one (say, a 2) in mere minutes. One specific exercise you can try is to lengthen your exhalations. Why? When you inhale, your heart rate increases. When you exhale, it slows down. Whenever you need to self-regulate, for example before presenting to your senior leadership team or when you’re trying to stay patient in a frustrating meeting, try this exercise: Close your eyes and breathe in for a count of four and out for a count of eight for a minimum of two minutes. Taking a few minutes to slow down and lengthen your exhales will activate your parasympathetic nervous system, the part of your autonomic nervous system that helps your body rest and digest, the opposite of the “fight-or-flight system” which prepares your body to either fight or flee from a perceived threat. As a result, you’ll calm down quickly. https://buff.ly/3VJ5Vvk #MindfulBreathing #StressRelief #EmotionalRegulation #BreathingExercises #Mindfulness #MentalWellbeing #StressManagement #WellnessTips #LeadershipWellbeing #WorkplaceWellness #SelfCare #EmotionalIntelligence #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

Check out this FREE virtual session provided by the Greater New York Chapter of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) on September 5th starting at 8am EST on Technology & Dispute Resolution: Ethics & Practicalities for Reducing Risks & Harnessing Opportunities. The application of technology to dispute resolution has grown exponentially in the shadow of the pandemic, particularly in the use of remote video conferencing. The use of online dispute resolution platforms and artificial intelligence continues this trend. The disruptive nature of technology provides new opportunities for increasing access to justice while also raising new ethical issues for our processes. We will examine this in light of expanding choices and risks when technology is integrated into dispute handling. Ethical principles and standards for applying technology to dispute resolution will be explored and we will discuss ways to operationalize them in our practices. This year in the United States, Labor Day falls on September 2nd. Many of us spend the holiday enjoying time off of work, at parties with friends and family, or just soaking up the last days of summer weather. Gretchen Rubin, author of Life in Five Senses and co-host of The Happier podcast also suggests that the holiday can be a catalyst to reflect on our own “labor”—our work life, whether paid or unpaid. How could you be happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative in your work life? Could you delegate a task, buy a helpful new tool, learn a new skill, update your resume, start a side hustle, finish a project, organize your space, or have a difficult conversation? For more great tips on finding your “happy” at work, subscribe to Rubin’s popular “Work Happier” newsletter on LinkedIn https://buff.ly/3SX04C6 #LaborDay #WorkLifeBalance #CareerGrowth #ProductivityTips #WorkHappiness #WorkHappier #PersonalDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #LifeInFiveSenses #MindfulWork #CareerWellbeing #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

The future of dispute resolution is increasingly online, a shift that was accelerated by the pandemic. The challenges of the past few years have shown that many disputes can be resolved just as effectively in a virtual environment as they can in person. ADR Vantage recognized this potential early on, having offered telephone and virtual mediation services for years, enabling clients to access dispute resolution from anywhere, with greater flexibility and convenience. This trend is gaining momentum across the industry. On July 1st, the American Arbitration Association (AAA) announced its purchase of ODR.com and its parent company, Resourceful Internet Solutions. This acquisition highlights the growing importance of digital tools in the dispute resolution process, making it clear that online platforms are not just a temporary solution but a permanent fixture in the ADR landscape. As the landscape of dispute resolution evolves, it's clear that online platforms will play an increasingly critical role, offering new possibilities for resolving conflicts quickly, effectively, and equitably. #DisputeResolution #AlternativeDisputeResolution #ODR #VirtualMediation #ADR #RemoteMediation #ConflictResolution #Mediation #DigitalTransformation #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

Today is Women’s Equality Day in the United States, which commemorates the constitutional amendment that protects women’s right to vote. As we look at the dynamic beauty of our modern workplaces, it’s often hard to imagine a world where women didn’t participate in every aspect of society. Using the Internet Archives, we get glimpses into women’s working conditions throughout the 20th century, both positive and negative. But let’s also consider the stark realities that women faced at the time Women’s Equality Day first began. Women’s Equality Day was first celebrated in 1971. That was the same year that the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed the practice of private employers refusing to hire women with preschool children. A year later, Katharine Graham became the first woman to become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company (The Washington Post). Up until 1974, it was legal for employers to force pregnant employees to take maternity leave on the assumption that women were incapable of working while pregnant. That same year, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act finally allowed women to open credit applications without a man cosigning. The working world is very different for women today than it was when the first Women’s Equality Day was celebrated. And still, we have a great distance to go. Let us reflect on the sacrifices and success of the women who came before us and let us be the trailblazers for our daughters and granddaughters after us. #WomensEqualityDay #GenderEquality #WomensRights #EmpowerWomen #HR #EqualityForAll #WomenInLeadership #BreakTheBias #WomenEmpowerment #HerStory #Feminism #EqualRights #WomenSupportingWomen #Workplace #Equality #Inclusion #DEI ##DEIB #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether

When you think of workplace equity, the weather might not immediately come to mind. However, as much of the nation is dealing with heat alerts and record-breaking temperatures this summer, it’s a reminder that even the weather can impact the way equity plays out in communities and workplaces. “Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States, killing more than 200 people last year. The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed a new rule that would require employers to develop injury and illness prevention plans in order to better protect workers from heat-related injuries and death. The department said that new regulations could provide protection for some 36 million workers nationwide, particularly people of color, who are more likely to work in roles that could expose them to extreme heat.” https://buff.ly/3YNssKw #Leadership #Workplace #Equity #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #InclusionMatters #DEI #EquitableWorkplace #EmployeeEngagement #OrganizationalEffectiveness #ADR #HR #HelpingPeopleWorkBetterTogether
