“I am intelligent and have good work experience, but my English is not great. So I don't always understand everything I have to do. But you all have my back. You are my crew!" Christopher, a Hilltop Branch regular, was injured at work. He came to the Spanish-speaking staff in our Community Support Center to file workers comp, and over the course of multiple appointments, Christopher updated his resume, created an Indeed profile, submitted applications, and landed some interviews. Recently, Christopher dropped by with good news: he’s been offered a position! He shared that working with the library has made a huge difference as he navigates this experience. ¡Felicidades, Christopher! 🎉 #Library #ESL #JobInterviews

On February 28th, IRLC in partnership with Cincinnati Public Schools held this year’s second session of the “Entrepreneurship Mentoring Program for ESL (English as Second Language) Students.” This program was launched as a pilot in 2021 to improve four-year graduation rates among English learners and multicultural students. While the program focuses on educating students on entrepreneurship opportunities after graduation, it also connects them with IRLC for immigration services. IRLC has been a partner in this program since the beginning, and we are glad to see how the program is growing. —----------- At the Immigrant & Refugee Law Center, we are dedicated to providing pro bono legal services for refugees and immigrants seeking a new beginning in the Greater Cincinnati area. Has anyone incorporated ASL into their ESL instruction? I was at the COABE Conference last week in Nashville and a presenter brought this up. He said ASL was useful for demonstrating subject pronouns and possessives to pre-literate or beginner English language learners, among some other function words. Please share below if you have incorporated some ASL into your ESL classes and how that has worked for you.
