Building power through collective advocacy and organizing to achieve racial equity

About us

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago builds power through collective advocacy and organizing to achieve racial equity. We do this through: LEADERSHIP Developing grassroots leaders through base-building programs such as KINETIC (for high school English learners), I Speak Power (for adult English learners), and A Just Chi (at-large community members) ADVOCACY Connecting communities through coalition leadership including Just Democracy Illinois, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment Coalition CIVIC ENGAGEMENT Getting out the vote by reaching out to Asian Americans, increasing participation, and growing our community’s power. We win campaigns by exercising our power and mobilizing community members to achieve racial equity. -- Advancing Justice | Chicago is an affiliate of Asian Americans Advancing Justice. Our national affiliation allows us to raise a more powerful voice to better serve our communities and become more effective in addressing the civil rights issues faced by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and other vulnerable and underserved communities. Other Advancing Justice affiliates are located in Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

  • Advancing Justice | Chicago commends the AAPI Coalition of Wisconsin for their instrumental role in the passage of Act 266, Wisconsin’s Hmong American and Asian American Education Bill this past spring! The Coalition has done incredible work to pass this historic bill over the past three years – mobilizing and working alongside community members to provide public testimony, attending legislative hearings, reaching out to legislators, and making their voices heard. This bill was championed by state Rep. Francesca Hong, Wisconsin’s first Asian American state legislator. As part of our regional work supporting Midwest AAPI organizations, we have helped the AAPI Coalition of Wisconsin build strategies for stronger infrastructure and grassroots organizing over the past year. We have also shared lessons learned from the advocacy and implementation of Illinois’ TEAACH Act as they embark on implementation of their new inclusive history requirement. We are excited to continue our partnership and can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!

  • Come to A Just Chi's August General Meeting! On August 21st, A Just Chi's Abolition and Community Building Working Group will facilitate Why Should Asian Americans Care?: A Framework for Understanding Anti-Asian Racism. This workshop intends to ground our understandings of anti-Asian racism in our shared histories of imperialism and colonialism with other communities of color. We'll hold space for us to reflect together and take action in fighting for a racially equitable future! This workshop will be the Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago office (4716 N Broadway) at 6-8pm. Food and snacks will be provided! Masks are required (extras provided) at all times except for when eating and drinking and our office has two large air purifiers running throughout the space. Please register at bit.ly/aug-ajc to give us an accurate headcount for food. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Take a sneak peek at ☀️ A Just Chi's summer 😎 so far! We've canvassed our community members, built up our own skillsets, and celebrated joy with one another. 1) The Abolition and Building Communities (ABC) Working Group canvassing for Stop Shotspotter at Ping Tom Park in Chinatown. We spoke to our communities about their vision for community safety and the Peacebook Ordinance! 2) The Immigrant Justice (IJ) Working Group celebrating the passage of the Language Equity and Access Act! We paved the way for translation and interpretation services at all Illinois state agencies and increased accessibility for all! 3) A Just Chi at the Juneteenth Freedom Market at the Salt Shed! We made some new friends, ate some great food, and spent all of our money at small businesses. 4) ABC and IJ's Know Your Rights Training with First Defense Legal Aid! We learned about how to assert our rights when interacting with police and about resources in the Chicago and Cook County. 5-6) A Just Chi at Argyle Night Market! We canvassed for the FAIR Act with the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice and to end pretextual traffic stops with Free to Move Coalition. Come spend your summer with A Just Chi, too! 🌞 ABC is facilitating Public Safety 101 on Wednesday, July 17th from 6-8pm at Buttercup Park. We’ll dive into our experiences with safety, our perceptions of carceral systems, and our stake in fighting for abolition. Register at bit.ly/july-ajc (dinner will be provided)!
