The Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant treats approximately 26 billion liters of wastewater each year. But now, thanks to our technical support, it’s able to generate 60,000 gigajoules of renewable biomethane annually. At the heart of this unlikely energy supply is the biogas produced during the wastewater treatment process. Once captured and converted into biomethane, that natural gas is then injected into the local utility grid to provide process and building heating — enough to supply around 600 homes. The Downtown Rail Extension, also known as the Portal, will provide San Francisco and the Bay Area with a new key regional rail connection — linking a forecasted 90,000 average daily riders with 11 Bay Area transit systems. We’re proud to have been selected by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) to help bring this project to life. As program manager, we will implement an operating model to successfully deliver an array of program management and project supervision services. Once complete, this tunneling and station megaproject will extend Caltrain service from its current terminal at Fourth and King Streets to the Salesforce Transit Center and accommodate future California High-Speed Rail service. “AECOM has been proud to support the TJPA since the inception of the Transbay Program, and we’re thrilled to help deliver the next phase of this transformative investment,” said Mark Southwell, chief executive of our global Transportation business.
