“My experience of ageism has been through people’s reaction to me embracing getting older and changing my appearance,” one #AgeWithoutLimits campaign supporter told us. “I found that people expected me to disappear into the background as a lot of spaces seem to be under 30’s friendly. It’s almost as if it’s a crime to be older; to be myself unapologetically. I realised that I was ageist too when I was younger, and it’s taken being nearly 51 for me to see how I contributed to that harmful attitude without knowing. I’m determined to help change this perception wherever I can, because getting older is a privilege and this is the freest I’ve ever felt.” Negative attitudes towards ageing are so prevalent in our society, that it can be easy to internalise these ideas without realising. Celebrating the diversity of older age is a powerful way to challenge ageist stereotypes. How can we do this with creativity and joy?
