#supplychain #transportation Should you develop new technology to dominate the industry rather than sell it to existing supply chain operators? This is a tricky question, and there are quite a few indications that this model may work. Essentially, it is the trade-off between capturing value through software sales versus through higher operating efficiency. I have made this pitch to investors in the past and it's always been well-received, albeit mostly without tangible results. The biggest consideration is that selling tech to supply chain operators is incredibly hard. Many existing operators bank on the assumption that they'll be just a well without shiny new systems. This works as long as there is no change in the industry. However, it instantly ceases to be an option as soon as someone raises the stakes through deployment of new strategic capabilities. Seasoned supply chain operators know this all too well, and there is a lot of organizational slack between top management, who may want higher efficiency, and people on the ground, who, understandably so, just want to do their work and go home. One company that is circumventing these issues is Austin-based aifleet. It operates about 200 trucks and leverages AI development to increase driver efficiency such as maximizing utilization, reducing downtime, and increasing the number of miles driven, which in turn leads to higher margins and profitability. The interesting bit is that the company doesn't need to focus on productivity alone but can develop better backend processes and customer interfaces. They are someone to follow and it will be fascinating to see how they fare in the long run. Operating a trucking business isn't for the faint of heart. #truckl #innovation
