November is Native American Heritage Month! Sharon Hamer is breaking barriers! As co-founder and president of Akiak Technology, LLC, she's the first indigenous woman president of the first Tribally owned 8(a)-certified company in western Alaska. The 8(a) program provides small businesses training and technical assistance to help them compete for and win federal contracts. Sharon is Yup’ik and an enrolled member of the Akiak Native Community, a federally recognized Tribe. She retired after 31 years of federal service to launch and grow businesses that could provide a better economic future for her Tribe. Sharon grew her first 8(a) company, Akiak Technology, from negative revenue in 2019 and 2020 to more than $1 million in sales in 2021. The business accelerated revenue growth with its first 8(a) prime contract worth several million dollars over two years. Sharon is also the co-founder and president of Alexandria, Virginia-based Akiak Facility Systems. In addition, she's a member of the Akiak Holdings Board of Directors and co-founder of the non-profit Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Tribal Broadband Consortium, which consists of 17 Tribal Nations. For her business success and commitment to community, Sharon was named SBA's Virginia Small Business Person of the Year in 2022.
