HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is often misunderstood. Here are 4 HPV myths we need to bust: 💬 "HPV only affects women." Nope, it can infect anyone. 💬 "You'll know if you have HPV." Actually, many people never show symptoms. 💬 "HPV always causes cancer." While some types can, most infections clear up on their own. 💬 "No sex = no need for the HPV vaccine." Wrong! It's most effective before any sexual contact. These myths are dangerous. They may make young people skip important prevention and screening. Our advice? Stick to the facts. Do you know any 14–21-year-olds that would love to get up to $110 for watching a film? The Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is offering youth the chance to take part in a health study called the Film Learning Experience (FLEX). They’ll watch a film, share their thoughts, and potentially help shape how health-based films impact youth. What participants will do: ⤵️ ✔️ Complete a quick questionnaire to confirm they qualify ✔️ Attend a 2.5-hour session to watch the film ✔️ Fill out surveys over the next 9 months (after the film, at 3 months, and 9 months) ✔️ Earn up to $110 in gift cards for their time If you know young people who might be interested, pass this along NOW. For more details, reach out to Jen Latimer at [email protected] or 504-599-7712.

Struggling to talk about HIV testing with young people? It's tough, but you can do it. Here's why it may be challenging: ⚠️ Thinking facts alone are enough - You also need to create a safe space for open talks. ⚠️ Waiting for the "right moment” - Sometimes, you simply have to start the conversation. ⚠️ Not being inclusive - Use words and examples that work for all young people, regardless of their background. If you’re a youth-serving professional or parent, don’t get discouraged. Keep trying! Every attempt teaches you something new.

When was the last time you talked about the HPV Vaccine with a young person? It doesn’t matter if you’re a trusted counselor, parent, or caregiver, youth look up to you. So, what can you do? First, know the basics: The HPV vaccine prevents several types of cancer. It's safe, effective, and works best when given early. Then, use words they understand and listen when they talk. You don't need all the answers. Simply be there, be honest, and keep the door open for questions.

Stigma can block the path to effective HIV prevention and treatment. To break down barriers, you can start normalizing conversations with young people about HIV in educational settings. Focus on giving accurate and accessible information. And don’t forget to remind them that support services are welcoming and confidential. SHARE this post with your network.
