Alliance for Boys and Men of Color

One of the greatest accomplishments of my career has been my work on the Healing Together Campaign with the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color supported by the Blue Shield of California Foundation. This project has surpassed any other in terms of hours invested and longevity. Engaging boys and men in ending intimate partner violence and shifting the system of punishment to healing and accountability has been both challenging and rewarding. I spent earlier this week in San Diego for the launch of the 2024 Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Data Fellowship! I’m so excited to be part of this cohort and continue to grow in research and data. 🤓

Still feeling empowered after our Policy Briefing last week! We had attendees from all over the state come together to share ideas, issues, joy, laughs, and most of all, build power with one another. This is how we build movements, and we are grateful for all of our partners who consider us comrades in this work.

Very excited to share that in collaboration with other stakeholders across California, the California Department of Social Services launched the Community Response Initiative to Strengthen Emergency Systems (C.R.I.S.E.S) Act Grant Pilot Program this month! This new endeavor will invest $9.5 million in building community capacity across the state and is aimed at supporting the launch of four 3-year pilot projects that will implement first responder protocols in crisis situations unrelated to police, fire or medical emergencies with subject matter experts and community based organizations in a co-response model with the local jurisdiction. - Oakland & Family Bridges, Inc. - $3.56M - Marin & Marin County Cooperation Team - $1.34M - Sacramento & Bay Area Community Services - $2.06M - Santa Cruz & Family Services Agency of the Central Coast, First Step Program - $2.58M Our hope is that we can learn from these pilots and scale solutions across the state in an effort to continue modernizing emergency response systems to better meet the needs of the residents of California. This program would not be have been possible without the leadership of Congressmember Sydney Kamlager, whose efforts resulted in Governor Gavin Newsom signing California Assembly Bill 118 into law in 2021, along with co-sponsoring organizations Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, ACLU California Action, Anti Police Terror Project, Berkeley Free Clinic, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, East Bay Community Law Center, Center Justice Teams Network, Oakland Power Projects, PolicyLink, Public Health Advocates, Silicon Valley De Bug, STOP (Stop Terrorism Oppression by Police) Coalition, UDW / AFSCME Local 3930 and Youth Justice Coalition. Additional technical assistance was provided by Urban Peace Institute. And a big heaping thanks to Lakisha Green - your work made this all possible.
