The Ivy League is Overrated Chamath on E193: "We have fallen into this trap of saying that these highly credentialed schools, that cost $60K-$80K/year, graduate the best kids." "And I don't think that that's true." "They're not the smartest kids." "They're not the hardest working kids." "So we should stop saying top schools." "These Ivy League schools are not the top schools." #college #university #ivyleague #school #degree #hiring #firstjob #clips #podcastclips #tech #startups #jobs #allinpodcast #allin #podcast #technology #business

US job growth was just revised down by 818K (!) from April 2023 to March 2024. New jobs added were 30% less than initially reported. This is the largest downward revision since 2009! All-In saw this coming. David O. Sacks on August 2nd (E190): "The economic data that comes out keeps getting reforecast down." "So they put out a provisional number or an estimate, and then when they finalize the number three months or six months later, it always seems to go in one direction." "We've seen this over and over again with new jobs being reforecast down. And we saw this with the Q1 GDP." Chamath on August 9th (E191): "We're in a low-key recession." "So I think that we're going to probably go through a couple of very difficult revisions of old data." "The thing to remember about nonfarm payrolls isn't as much what the number is, but if you actually look to the number of times it then gets revised, the reality is that these things get revised constantly." "And right now we're in this trend where we are overestimating and revising down." #economy #jobs #unemployment #trump #biden #kamalaharris #election #2024 #recession #employment #jobmarket #hiring #business #startups #tech #clips #podcast #allinpodcast #allin

Remote Work is Killing Career Growth for Young Professionals Chamath explains: There are two types of mentoring 1) "Capital M Mentoring" "Capital M is where some person is assigned to you. They're going to imbue some magical phrase, or saying, or thing, and all of a sudden everything is going to work out for you." "That form of Capital M Mentoring doesn't exist and has never worked for those that have tried it." 2) "small m mentoring" "The thing that's really productive is small m mentoring. And that happens when you model behaviors of really smart people, and really capable people, really ethical people." "And again, that happens because you're seeing them on a day to day basis, not just in a meeting, but in the gaps between meetings. They'll include you in certain things, or you'll have lunch with them." Chamath sums it up: "All of these people that are looking for an accelerant in their career, they've robbed themselves of the most powerful accelerant possible, which is capable people to surround themselves with." "They are going to look back on these decisions, and they're going to regret them." #remotework #wfh #workfromhome #returntowork #office #remote #clips #podcast #podcastclips #tech #startup #jobs #investing #allin #allinpodcast #allinpod #remotejobs #career #careeradvice

Starbucks Has a Sugar Problem On E192, the besties broke down recent underperformance at $SBUX, which led to a CEO change. But Chamath thinks Starbucks has a bigger long-term problem: "Starbucks is a sugar company." "For example, a caramel macchiato: 32g of sugar. Mocha frappuccino: 60g of sugar. This is 3x what you're supposed to have as a human in a day." "And these products also average 400-500 calories per drink." "So the real issue is that more consumers, as they question the repercussions of consuming a lot of sugar, what will they do?" "And I think that's a really big strategic question mark because the company has to embrace where the world is going." "The world is going away from sugar."

How to Fix Phone Addiction in Kids Jonathan Haidt has a four-point plan: 1) No smartphone before high school -- "Middle schoolers should not be having the internet in their pocket." 2) No social media before age 16 -- "Social media is wildly inappropriate for minors." -- "It's insane that we have children talking with grown men all over the world." 3) Phone-free schools -- "They get it back at the end of the day." 4) More independence for kids -- "... until the 1990s, kids had a childhood." It looks like California will be implementing one of Haidt's suggestions: Earlier this week, Gavin Newsom called on all CA school districts to restrict smartphone use in classrooms for the upcoming school year. "Every classroom should be a place of focus, learning, and growth. Working together, educators, administrators, and parents can create an environment where students are fully engaged in their education, free from the distractions on the phones and pressures of social media," "... I urge every school district to act now to restrict smartphone use on campus as we begin the new academic year,"

Google's Search Bias: Driven by the Media, Not the Algorithm Jason and David Friedberg break it down: JC: "The overwhelming majority of media is left-leaning." DF: "There's many more sites, potentially, putting out pro-Harris articles than there are putting out pro-Trump articles, which can start to over weight the algorithm, as you know." DF: "There are so many more liberal journalists, and there's so many more liberal media outlets out there." JC: "20 to 1, at least." DF: "The general news media bias is what you're actually seeing versus a Google bias." Jason points out a crazy stat: Since 1971, the percentage of journalists who identify as Republican has PLUMMETED. There is now a 33% gap between journalists who identify as Democrats vs Republicans. So what's the solution for the GOP? Investment. JC: "There needs to be more investment in journalists by Republicans." Jason also points out how Google can increase trust in their algorithm: More transparency! JC: "(Google needs) to intervene and put at the top of the search results and news, 'This is what we're indexing, this is the percentage that's left-leaning, this is the percentage that's right-leaning." "And that's something that Google could do that's very unique and that could move the whole country forward." #podcastclips #clips #startups #tech #google #search #bias #algorithm #media #liberal #conservative #technology #bigtech

The Low-Key Recession The headline numbers might not say recession, but if you dig a little deeper, it's there. Chamath breaks it down: 1) Nonfarm jobs added and GDP have each been revised down this year -- "Right now, we're in this trend where we are overestimating, and revising down." 2) Cyclical businesses are telling us demand isn't there -- Most recently, Airbnb dropped ~15% after reporting a demand slowdown Chamath's take: "I think we're in a recession. It probably becomes more obvious in Q3 and Q4." "And so Powell's going to have to cut." "The question is, will he overreact to the pressure and cut 75-100 (bps) versus 25 and take it slow?" #reels #economy #jobs #jobmarket #hiring #tech #startups #gdp #data #economics #finance #market #stocks #stockmarket #news #clips #podcast #podcastclips
