Caring for you and our community.

About us

Amberwell Hiawatha is rich in history and community pride. Built in 1951 from donations from local citizens, it has continued today as a community owned system without any tax subsidies. The hospital has gone through many additions, with our last major renovation being the new family practice clinic and outpatient service area in May 2011. The Hiawatha Community Hospital has prospered because of planning by our community board members and the generosity of citizens. Healthcare is continuously evolving. We are grateful that advancements in medicine and strides in technology are providing access to better healthcare within our own local community. Though our facility provides the equipment, it is our employees that offers the very best of psychosocial care -- mind, body and spirit -- to the patient and their loved ones. Whether over the phone, in-person or online, we welcome you to contact us if we can help you in any way.

Amberwell Health is thrilled to welcome Annette Anwander, MD, to the primary care team at Amberwell Hiawatha. Dr. Anwander’s expertise spans all ages, with a particular focus on maternal care and obstetrics. Her journey into medicine was influenced by early exposure to healthcare and a strong desire to serve in a small-town setting. Dr. Anwander and her family chose Hiawatha for its unique qualities and the opportunity to practice maternal care. "We drew a couple-hour radius around Kansas City and focused on places that had obstetrics," she explained. "Hiawatha stood out, and after visiting, my wife and I really enjoyed the town and the people we met. Everyone was friendly and welcoming." At a young age, Dr. Anwander’s interest in healthcare was inspired by her mother, a NICU nurse. She initially considered a nursing career but decided to become a physician to have a broader impact. "I always knew I wanted to go into medicine," she shared. "Growing up in a smaller town, I wanted to go back to a similar community and be a primary care provider, where I could be the most useful." Dr. Anwander believes in creating a welcoming environment for her patients. "I like to think that I'm approachable and easy to talk to,” she explained. “I hope to increase patient autonomy through education and shared decision making, allowing for a collaborative approach to their healthcare.” Her approachable demeanor and dedication to patient care make her an excellent choice for those seeking a family physician. Dr. Anwander recently moved to Hiawatha with her wife and two sons. Outside of her medical practice, she enjoys a variety of hobbies. She played soccer in college and continues to play in local leagues. Additionally, she enjoys crochet, cross-stitch, fishing, and spending time with her family. They are excited to get involved in local events and activities, especially through Hiawatha Parks & Recreation.

Peter Rosa, MD, is a primary care provider at Amberwell Hiawatha. Dr. Rosa began caring for the Hiawatha community in 1998 and has been a familiar and trusted face ever since. During a brief hiatus beginning in 2022, he and his wife served at a hospital in the United Arab Emirates. He returned to Hiawatha in 2024 to continue to offer the compassionate and skilled care that has always been at the heart of his practice. Often praised for his excellent bedside manner, Dr. Rosa ensures that each patient feels heard and cared for. Dr. Rosa’s return to Amberwell had a lot to do with his deep connection to Hiawatha, which has been home to him and his family for over twenty-five years. “Hiawatha is home,” he explained. “We’ve enjoyed our travels and adventures, and now we’ve settled in. This fits.” In addition to feeling at home in Hiawatha, Dr. Rosa returned to be near his children, and eventually, his children’s children. Dr. Rosa initially explored a career in dentistry but found his true calling in family medicine, drawn by his interest in both science and people. “I knew I wanted to live in a small town,” he said. “As a family doctor in a close-knit community, I enjoy the relationships I get to build with my patients. I get to know them so well that it makes getting through the healthcare part of their visits faster,” he joked, “then I have time to ask about their lives.” Patients choose Dr. Rosa for his attentive and personal approach to care. “I think people know that I listen, and I care,” he shared. His long tenure in the community has allowed him to build deep connections with his patients, helping him to quickly notice when something is amiss with their health, which is invaluable in providing effective care. Dr. Rosa and his wife share four children, three daughters and one son. Each has followed in their parents’ footsteps, pursuing careers in healthcare and veterinary science. Dr. Rosa is an avid outdoorsman. When he is not caring for patients, he enjoys hiking, gardening, and planting trees—a hobby that reminds him of his various travels. “Walking along the tree-lined path on our property and remembering different vacations we’ve taken based on the over five hundred trees we’ve planted from our travels is indeed something special,” he said. Dr. Rosa prioritizes being active in community service, having served on the school board and co-founded a winter basketball program. He’s a faithful participant in church activities and always eager to explore new ways to engage with the community.

Amberwell is excited to welcome Abigail Reed, PA-C, to the Surgical Care team at Amberwell Hiawatha. Abigail and her family moved from Washington state to Hiawatha, Kansas, preferring the close-knit, community feel of a small Midwestern town to the hustle and bustle of the West Coast. She joins Amberwell with extensive experience in a wide range of areas, including general surgery, breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, wound care, and C-sections. Abigail is passionate about patient-centered care and treats each patient with empathy, compassion, and respect. She is thrilled to begin her journey with Amberwell and become an active member of the Hiawatha community.  Abigail and her husband were drawn to Hiawatha because they were looking for a small community in the Midwest where they could settle down and raise their children. “My husband is from a small town in Upstate New York and has fond memories of growing up in a close-knit community,” said Abigail. During my search, I saw that Amberwell Hiawatha was hiring in surgical care, and so I reached out and was invited for an interview. We wanted to visit Hiawatha in person to get a sense of the community and the area, and we absolutely fell in love! It’s a beautiful town and the people are so welcoming and kind. We began making friends almost instantly, and that was a huge factor in our decision to move here.”   When asked about her patients' experience, Abigail replied, “I really take the time to listen to my patients. It's not just about hearing their symptoms; it's about understanding their experiences, which often gives me the clues I need for the right diagnosis or treatment. My patients know they can talk to me without fear of judgment, which builds trust and helps me treat them effectively. I meet each person with empathy, compassion, and respect, because that's the heart of my practice. Sure, it can be tough when patients don't immediately take the advice or services offered, but I never give up on them. I remember that pivotal moments for change are often unpredictable, and I need to be there for them when they're ready. That's what being a healthcare provider is all about.”  Abigail and her husband have two young children, a son and a daughter, along with two dogs—Bailey, a beagle mix, and Echo, a golden retriever. When she’s not caring for patients, Abigail loves spending time with her family. Her favorite hobbies involve being outdoors, hiking, skeet and trap shooting, camping, hunting, and fishing. During football season, she cheers for the Buffalo Bills.

Amberwell is excited to introduce Tiffani Bradbury, FNP-C, as the newest member of the emergency care team at Amberwell Hiawatha. Tiffani has extensive experience in multiple healthcare settings and has cared for a wide range of patients from infants through adults. She has a patient-centered mindset and a desire to connect with her patients on a personal level and involve them in their care.      Tiffani chose Amberwell Hiawatha because she wanted to serve in the emergency department of a smaller community. “I have experience in nearly every imaginable healthcare setting, and I’ve found fulfillment in all of them,” said Tiffani, “but my true passion is emergency care. The wide variety of cases we see in the emergency department is fascinating to me, and so when I spotted an emergency position listed on Amberwell’s website, I was excited to apply.”  Tiffani knew from the time she was in high school that she wanted to pursue a nursing career. "I've always wanted to help people; I've always had a caregiver personality," she recalls. “What solidified my decision to go into nursing was caring for my injured mother when I was sixteen. After that, I graduated from high school, went straight into Missouri Western, earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and started working in healthcare immediately.”  Tiffani’s path to becoming a nurse practitioner has been diverse and purpose driven. “My healthcare journey began at a large children’s hospital, where I worked as an RN in the NICU,” said Tiffani. “Over the years, my roles included critical care transport, labor and delivery nurse, ER nurse, primary care provider for the homeless population, and more.” This range of experience has equipped her with a unique perspective, allowing her to approach patient care with empathy and a deep understanding of patients’ needs.  “I value building partnerships with my patients, ensuring they feel heard and understood throughout their healthcare journeys,” explained Tiffani. Her commitment to providing exceptional care shines through in her willingness to listen attentively to patient concerns and involve them in their own care decisions. “I strive to create a nonjudgmental environment where patients are active participants in their treatment plans,” she said. Tiffani often uses lightheartedness and her sense of humor to connect with patients and put them at ease.  Beyond her healthcare role, Tiffani is a devoted mother of three. She and her family love spending time outdoors, especially on their property, where they have various animals, including an eight-hundred-pound pet pig named Gracie. Tiffani’s favorite hobby is reading. We extend the warmest welcome to Tiffani. We’re so happy that she chose to become a member of our Amberwell community!
