A new study out of Annals of Internal Medicine provides an update on the cost of cancer screening in the U.S. It flags colonoscopy as having an outsized cost – approximately 55% of the $43.2 billion spent on cancer screening in the U.S. in 2021. Three key points to keep in mind when reading the study (more details on our website: https://ow.ly/6Pbs50SScWX): 1. We are very good at screening for colorectal cancer. CRC is the only cancer for which the U.S. Preventive Services Taskforce has a Grade A recommendation for all people of a certain age. This is a research-based recommendation of the clinically meaningful benefits of screening. Screening prevents colorectal cancer and saves lives – we celebrate that. 2. While colonoscopy does have high costs at the time of screening, it can result in significant cost-saving downstream since colorectal cancer has the second-highest treatment cost of any cancer. 3. It is inappropriate to lump colonoscopy with other cancer screening tests without considering the total costs of screening, which includes the follow-up of abnormal mammograms, cervical cancer tests, PSA, lung CT scans and FIT.

Every day, countless GI patients face delays and denials in getting the treatments they need due to step therapy protocols. As a result, this red tape can delay access to needed care and result in serious or irreversible health outcomes. The Safe Step Act (H.R. 2630/S. 652) serves as a crucial piece of legislation designed to protect patients by ensuring timely access to prescribed medications without requiring them to try and fail other drugs before receiving coverage. As the final Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) package is being negotiated, please join us in taking action by contacting your members of Congress and urging their support for the Safe Step Act. Let’s work together to pass the #SafeStepAct and ensure that patients have access to the medications they need! Use our easy take action alert: https://ow.ly/3oy250SHGij
