On August 4, 1790, the first Congress made the historic decision to authorize the construction of ten vessels, establishing the U.S. Coast Guard. These vessels were tasked with enforcing tariff and trade laws and preventing smuggling, marking the beginning of what would become a legacy of dedication and service. #SemperParatus Until the establishment of the Navy Department in 1798, the Coast Guard was the nation's only armed force afloat, providing protection and enforcement on our waters. On this day in 1876, one hundred years on from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Colorado, ‘the Centennial State,’ joined the Union as the 38th state. The state is home to world-renowned ski slopes and hiking trails, lively cities, and rich Native American heritage. The state is also a leader in environmental conservation.
