About us
The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) is a professional, non-profit, scientific, and educational organization. AATB is the only national tissue banking organization in the United States, and its membership totals more than 120 accredited tissue banks and over 7,00 individual members. These banks recover tissue from more than 70,000 donors and distribute in excess of 3.3 million allografts for more than 2.5 million tissue transplants performed annually in the US. The overwhelming majority of the human tissue distributed for these transplants comes from AATB-accredited tissue banks.

Born in New York City in 1936, Dr. Clive Callender discovered his passion for medicine at the age of seven. In 1969, he joined the faculty at Howard University School of Medicine, and in 1974, he established the Howard University Hospital Transplant Center, the first of its kind at a historically Black medical school. Dr. Callender became the third African American transplant surgeon in the United States. In 1992, driven by a mission to raise organ donation awareness and reduce the number of patients awaiting transplants in minority communities, he founded the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP). Today, Dr. Callender continues to educate and inspire at Howard University. 💙💚 #NMDAM2024 #DonateLife Learn more about Dr. Callender and MOTTEP at https://lnkd.in/gekqeTW

August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM)—a collaborative effort to save and improve the quality of life in diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Why is NMDAM needed? 60% of patients on the national transplant waiting list are from multicultural communities. The need for donation and transplantation is more pronounced in minority communities, where disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease contribute to organ failure, especially kidney failure. You can find resources to share and read more about NMDAM at nmag1.org and DonateLife.net 💙💚 #DonateLife #NMDAM2024 NMDAM is a collaborative effort of the National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Multicultural Action Group (NMAG).
