ACHE and healthcare lost an incredible and irreplaceable leader this week in Chuck Stokes, FACHE, who passed away Tuesday. Chuck served as ACHE Chair-Elect from 2016–2017, Chair from 2017–2018 and Immediate Past Chair from 2018–2019, and he was a beloved colleague and friend to so many in our field. Chuck brought a unique and valuable perspective to his leadership roles given his career path—from orderly to critical care nurse and then nurse executive before serving as COO of four prominent health systems. He then served as president of NMMC before leading the Memorial Hermann Health System, first as COO and then as president and CEO until his retirement in 2019. That trajectory from bedside caregiver to the head of a $5.6 billion organization instilled in him a deep passion for servant leadership and a desire to help others strengthen their leadership skills and grow their executive capacities. His work led to numerous accolades, including the prestigious Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award, the United States’ highest presidential honor for performance excellence, which was awarded to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital in 2016. Under his leadership, North Mississippi Medical Center received the Baldrige award in 2006 while he was president. Chuck inspired creativity, engendered support and repeatedly guided organizations toward excellence in patient care. He was instrumental in shaping healthcare today and inspiring many to be servant leaders to their patients and communities. He stood for quality, safety and the highest of ethical standards—all while bringing focus, passion and purpose to his work. And he was an avid mentor who believed in bringing out the best in everyone. Thank for you everything, Chuck. You will be deeply missed.
