  • “What we teach changes lives in the way we will never know.” This was the realization Dawn Pote had that fuels her passion for teaching. Dawn has been a committed American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor since 1986 and a trainer since the mid-90s. Her journey started as taking a CPR class for a job requirement, where Dawn’s amazing CPR instructors taught her the importance of working to understand and adapt for your students. This learning showed Dawn the impact the way a class is taught has on a person. She is the executive director of well-being and recreation at Illinois State University and empowers and certifies hundreds of students in Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training. She knows her training is more than a job as she notes, “I don’t always know the motivation of my students in taking the class, but I always know I make a difference.” Additionally, Dawn’s passion for the Red Cross mission has led her to get involved with other aspects of the Red Cross such as community CPR chapter training and working on the chapter’s health and safety board. She even participated in some disaster work with tornadoes and a blizzard in Knoxville, Tennessee. Although Dawn is looking to retire soon, she knows she’s not ready to leave behind the Red Cross and loves that there’s so many opportunities to volunteer. For those wondering if there’s a place in the Red Cross for them, take it from Dawn, “If you have time and passion, there’s a way to serve.” Thank you, Dawn, for making a difference, in more ways than one!❤️

Congratulations to our Director of Aquatics Programs, Science & Education, Stephanie Shook for being announced the Competitor Aquatic Professional of the Month! 🎉

We're excited to announce the Competitor Aquatic Professional of the Month, Stephanie Shook! Stephanie is the Director, Aquatic Programs, Science & Education at American National Red Cross, & she has a great aquatic story! "Many years ago, my father dropped me off at the pool early one Saturday morning to take a Lifeguarding course. I asked why & he said so you can get a job. I said, “I’m not looking for a job!” & so it began… Prior to joining the American Red Cross, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Resources Admin from North Carolina State University. I spent 30 years working as an aquatic professional starting with Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department in North Carolina, managed multiple sites with an HOA in Wake County, then relocated to northern Virginia to work with Prince William County Parks & Recreation. I managed year-round aquatic centers with all the trimmings, seasonal pools & waterparks, taught base-level & instructor-level courses as a Red Cross instructor trainer in water safety & lifeguarding, taught pool operations courses, worked as a swim coach, & managed large year-round swim lesson programs. I began serving on state & national aquatic committees & was honored to serve on the National Aquatic Board of NRPA & assisted colleagues with the annual National Aquatic Conference. I then realized that I, & all of you, may have something to offer “outside my walls”. So, I gave my first conference presentation at an NRPA conference, & survived, lol. I remained on the NRPA Aquatic Board & got more involved in aquatics from a national perspective. My two projects on the Board were to focus on National Water Safety Week (changed it from a week to a month & reinvigorated it) & get the word out about the emerging topics on the scene at that time – Recreational Water Illness, & the forming Model Aquatic Health Code. I was part of the inaugural AOAP board for a short stint. Fast forward a few years & I had the opportunity to join the American National Red Cross in the Program Development department. It was scary to make the transition “off the deck” but off I went. The years of national work, understanding the challenges & successes of others, & networking across the country laid the foundation to prepare me to move on to these broader things. In my time at the Red Cross (15 years) my major projects have included the development of American Red Cross aquatics programs including the Lifeguarding program, Lifeguard VR, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, the Swimming & Water Safety program, Lifeguard Management, & the Aquatic Examiner Service. I launched & directed the Instructor Trainer program at the Red Cross, launching the Instructor Trainer Academies in 2015 for all programs at the Red Cross. It is important work that I have been honored to be a part of. I’m currently focused on the Swimming & Water Safety Program revisions. I do miss playing in (improving) the pump room though! Thanks for this honor & recognition!"
