Creating pathways to health for all, responding to disasters, & ensuring access to quality care for 45 years!
About us
For 45 years, we have been a beacon of health and hope for communities worldwide, confronting pressing health challenges. Established in 1979, we are a health-focused humanitarian organization dedicated to responding to people affected by poverty, disaster, and inequity with life-changing health programs, medicine, and supplies. Our mission is to help people and communities access health in times of disaster and every day. We envision pathways to health and opportunity for all, driven by our commitment to sustainable solutions and treating people as they want to be treated. To date, we have provided over $20 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the US. We distribute over $900 million in medicine and supplies to 90 countries each year. Over the next five years, we aim to help 100 million people gain access to quality healthcare. Let’s make health happen for everyone, everywhere.

Put yourself in the shoes of a soon-to-be mother in Tanzania. Quality health care is hard to find and the care you do have access to can leave you feeling isolated and unsupported. That was the harsh reality for Martha during her first five pregnancies, but, thanks to #Americares and local partners, Martha's sixth pregnancy would prove to be different. Martha received supportive care -- her husband and mother were even invited appointments, which was soothing for Martha. Over the last four years, #Americares has worked alongside local partners-- and patients like Martha -- to increase the use of health services and improve health outcomes by improving the quality of care at hospitals and clinics in the Mwanza area. The resources provided will ensure the changes Martha experienced are sustainable for her and future mothers in need of care. Americares and Women’s Health to Wealth work to reduce school dropout rates and improve the quality of care for newborns and pregnant women in Ghana’s Ashanti and Bono regions. From school-based health clubs for adolescent girls to essential newborn care training for health workers, this Helmsley-supported collaboration aims to bolster health services at every stage of a woman’s life. In its first year alone, the program made a significant impact in the region. Fifty schools established girls’ clubs and over 3,400 girls have joined, decreasing the school dropout rate due to unintended pregnancy by 38%. Maternal and newborn health outcomes have also improved. By the end of 2023, 70% of target facility staff were training in essential newborn care, an important factor in reducing high neonatal mortality rates. And we work to ensure every person – everywhere – has a fair and just opportunity to live their healthiest life.
